Custer’s high school volleyball team snapped its losing streak last week and recorded two wins and one loss in its last three matches.
Tuesday’s match versus Pine Ridge was a win, 3-2. Thursday’s game versus Spearfish resulted in a hard-fought 3-1 loss and Custer won versus Kadoka 2-1 in Saturday’s game.
Neither match the team came out on top in was easy, but the wins spurred the Wildcats to the most winning they’ve had in the season so far.
Custer’s game versus Pine Ridge went to five sets with back and forth wins between each team. Head coach Jill Hohn said Ally Cass’ “play and leadership were game changers in the last set” that yielded Custer’s fourth and fifth set wins 25-13 and 15-9.
Ally Cass had 12 kills this game, and both Bailey Cass and JoJo Larsen made six kills.
This game versus Pine Ridge also saw both Kylee Pulscher and Bailey Cass with five aces. Also, Larsen, Bailey Baker and Shauna Zacher all made five digs to help the Wildcats beat the Thorpes. Both Rachel Miklos and Madi Meyer had four kills, and Kylee Ellerton had two digs.
Thursday’s game versus Spearfish was a loss for Custer with the Wildcats only winning one set. Custer walked into the game 3-10 and fell to the somewhat equally ranked Spartans, who entered the match 6-14.
Yet, Hohn points out several Wildcats did many things right during the game. Zacher consistently goes for the ball and averages five digs a game, she said. Hohn also noted Shayleigh Forgey’s teamwork with sets and the Wildcat frontline’s more-consistent hands up at the net.
Saturday’s game versus Kadoka was a scoring flip-flop but Custer came out on top in the first and third sets 26-24 and 26-16.
Hohn said the team is encouraged to “not let up on their attacks” to keep overcoming in future games.
Ally Cass had 19 kills in the match, while adding 16  assists. Pulscher had 10 assists. Bailey Cass added five blocks, while Zacher had 10 digs.
Wildcat volleyball now takes this momentum into three upcoming matches.
Sept. 29 is a road game versus 2-13  Lead-Deadwood, and then Custer competes at the Lakota Nation Invitational this weekend.
Next week, Custer varsity plays at home at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Armory versus 8-6 Hot Springs.
