Hill City Purse Project blesses women’s shelters

It has been said that you can tell a lot about a woman by her purse. However, when it comes to the Hill City Purse Project (HCPP), you can tell a lot about the citizens of Hill City by the purses they put together for the women at the Cornerstone Women’s Home (CWH) in Rapid City and Women Escaping A Violent Environment (WEAVE) in Custer. 
“It’s just such a heartwarming project,” said Sue Anderson. “We all thought that we wouldn’t even think of continuing to do it except both places are so appreciative of what we bring in.”

One dead in fatal CSP crash

One person died Wednesday evening in a two vehicle crash in Custer County.
Preliminary crash information indicates a 2003 Ford Escape was traveling eastbound on U.S. Hwy. 16A near mile marker 33.  The Ford was negotiating a left curve, slid on the slick road and entered the oncoming lane. A 1973 Porsche 911 was traveling westbound at the same time and location. The front of the Ford struck the driver’s side of the Porsche.
The Ford spun around and came to rest on the highway. The Porsche entered the ditch and came to rest against a tree.

Chamber honors community stars

The stars were out in Custer on a chilly fall evening last Thursday at the Custer State Park State Game Lodge Event Barn, as community stars were presented a variety of awards at the Custer Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual award banquet.
Among the award winners was Custer YMCA director Rex Jorgensen, who was presented with the Individual of the Year Award.
Presenter Ron Bradeen told how Jorgensen works tirelessly to promote the YMCA, saying there are “a thousand success stories” with regard to everything Jorgensen has done for the community over the years.

Hounds, Pugs and Hugs

In June 2023, Hounds, Pugs and Hugs, a pet-sitting service owned by Gena Keller, opened for business. In addition to giving area pets some TLC, Keller has also passed along some generosity to local non-profits and charities.

Bigger east county library pitched

Hermosa is growing, and so should its library.
That’s the position of the Custer County Library Board, which has set a course called the “Eastern Custer County Annex Building Initiative” that, if ultimately supported by the Custer County Commission, would see a new building constructed on the Custer County Fairgrounds that could potentially not only house a new branch of the library, but county offices, Custer County Fair offices and perhaps even serve as a community center for Hermosa.

State breaks ground on women’s prison

While controversy continues over the site of a proposed new penitentiary near Sioux Falls, the state Department of Corrections is proceeding with a plan to build a new women’s prison on the other side of South Dakota.
State officials broke ground for the women’s prison Monday in Rapid City.
“I’m very happy to be here today and very proud of the work and the collaboration that has been happening over the course of the last six months,” said Kellie Wasko, state corrections secretary, during the ceremony.

Girlfriends getting ready to sparkle

With some new people on the 11th annual Girlfriends’ Weekend committee, Shawn Burkett, who is coordinating the event this year, says that the town is looking forward to a great weekend.
“It’s a lot of fun,” she said. “It’s a great way to get together with your girlfriends to shop locally and eat at good restaurants. It’s a whole weekend with a different event each day.”
The fun kicks off on Friday, Nov. 3, with the most anticipated event of the weekend — the  glitz and glam of the fashion show.

City council appoints engineer

In recent weeks and months, the Hill City Common Council has had meetings with KLJ Engineering and AE2S regarding the role of city engineer. Alderman Dale Householder said both were very competent companies that could do the work that the city needs. 
“We like the scope of the larger companies because they have multiple offices with multiple disciplinary experts which I think in the long run could save us money,” said Householder. 
Householder recommended proceeding with AE2S as the city engineer at the Oct. 23 meeting of the council.

Keystone Library hosting two events

South Dakota Humanities Speakers Bureau Scholar Molly Barari is conducting Her Heirlooms: Creative Life Writing Workshop at the Keystone Community Center (KCC) Saturday, Nov. 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The workshop’s focus is on childhood memories, writing dialogue and writing backstory. Barari will provide prompts to help participants write their life memories.
