Hills Self Storage to become Ace Hardware

Keating Resources has announced the successful sale of its 26,000-square-foot climate-controlled self-storage facility in Custer, The Hills Self Storage. The Lander, Wyo.-based Bregar family has acquired the facility, owners and operators of a chain of 12 hardware stores across Wyoming and South Dakota, affiliated with the Ace Hardware and Do It Best brands.
The facility, originally a long-vacant retail building purchased in October 2020, was renovated and repurposed into a climate-controlled self-storage center, reaching 78 percent occupancy before its sale.

Man murdered west of Custer

A Texas man was gunned to death by a Custer/Rapid City man last Friday, April 12.
At around 9:47 p.m. that day Custer County Dispatch received a call from Monument Health that there was a patient at the hospital who had been assaulted, and there had also been a shooting at that same victim's residence about one mile west of Custer.
According to Custer County Sheriff Marty Mechaley, deputies responded to the scene of the reported shooting and found a man deceased from apparent gunshot wounds.

Nursing home set to expand

Although it’s been only four months since it welcomed its first guest, the Custer Care and Rehab Center is expanding.
“It’s been exceptional,” said Madison Barta, assistant administrator of the facility, on how the first few months of the facility being open have gone. “We have a great staff on board, and we are grateful for the residents and staff we have here so far.”

School, city to cost share line

Steve Burgess with Dean Kurtz Construction presented four options to the  Custer School District Board of Education for getting water to the coming Career and Technical Education (CTE) addition at the  high school in its meeting held last Monday in Hermosa.

County must pay back misallocated funds

Improper allocation of federal funds received by the county will result in the county having to pay back the funds, it was learned at the April 3 meeting of the Custer County Commission.

Rural barn burns, animals escape

A barn is a complete loss after a fire in rural Custer County last Wednesday.
At around 1 p.m. April 10 Custer County Dispatch received a call about a structure fire on the north end of North Pole Road. Three trucks from the Custer Volunteer Fire Department responded, as well as two trucks from the Argyle Volunteer Fire Department and one truck from the Pringle Volunteer Fire Department.
The homeowners had a heat lamp in the barn for animals, which apparently was knocked over and caused the blaze. All of the animals were able to get out of the barn safely.

Child search has happy ending

Custer County Search and Rescue (SAR) had a major call recently, when outside of Custer a 7-year-old child who saw the family dog escaping the yard went after it into the woods. A short time later a parent noticed they were both gone and after a brief search called 911.

Neiman announces more layoffs

Neiman Enterprises announced last week layoffs and production reductions at its last remaining South Dakota facility, Spearfish Forest Products (SFP). The layoffs are the direct result of reductions to the Black Hills National Forest timber-sale program.

Goodwin is District 30 House candidate

Former House Majority Whip Tim Goodwin has announced his candidacy for District 30 House of Representatives.
Goodwin served in the state House from 2016-22. The committees he served on included Taxation and Transportation (two years), State Affairs (four years), Ag and Natural Resources (four years) and Military Affairs (four years). He also served as a Majority Whip for four years. Other assignments include serving on summer study committees about property taxes, hemp, recreational and medicinal marijuana and workforce housing.
