Three seek state Senate seat

Three Republicans are candidates for the lone District 30 seat in the South Dakota Senate, with Republican Julie Frye-Mueller running against a pair of challlengers—Amber Hulse and Forrest Foster—sin the June 4 election. The winner of that election will advance to face Democrat Bret Hansen in the fall General Election.

Frye-Mueller, of Rapid City, has served four years in the State House of Representatives and another four in the Senate, and is part owner of a small family business that will celebrate being open 41 years in October.

Zontafest set for June 8

Zontafest, a celebration of women’s music, dance and art, will be held June 8 from 4-9 p.m. at the Custer Beacon. There will be vendors, auctions, raffles and more.
Gumbo Lilies are the headline performers at 8 p.m. They play a variety of music including country, bluegrass, old-time fiddling, rock ‘n roll and Badger Clark ballads.

Six Republicans seek seat in District 30 House

A crowded field of Republicans will tangle for two seats in the South Dakota House of Representatives during this  June 4, with incumbent Trish Lander joined in the field by five other candidates for two, two-year terms in the house. The other seat open belonged to Dennis Krull, who chose not to seek reelection.
The two GOP winners of the primary election will advance to this fall’s general election, where they will face Democrat Susan Scheirbeck of Hill City.

County lights fire district fuse

It’s later than many wanted, won’t be as large as originally planned and will have to be approved by voters, but the creation of the Custer Fire Protection District is officially underway.
The wheels for the district were set in motion at the May 8 meeting of the Custer County Commission, when the commission directed state’s attorney Tracy Kelley to get a resolution drawn up to create said taxing district. A map of the proposed boundaries has already been created, as it will follow the boundaries of the already-established (non-taxed) Custer Fire Protection District.

City OKs Harbach Park use on July 4

“You might want to bring enough beer for 2,000 people.”
That was the tongue-in-cheek advice of City of Custer Mayor Bob Brown to Toni Thorman of Spearfish, whose son is getting married in Custer State Park July 5.
Brown’s advice wasn’t for the attendees of the wedding, but rather, for other people in Harbach Park the day of July 4, the day Thorman requested to apply for a brown bag permit (to allow beer and wine in the park) for the wedding rehearsal dinner, which the family is requesting take place in Harbach Park.

Sixty-four to graduate Saturday

Another school year is coming to a close and students will be sent off for summer break or off onto the next chapter of their lives. On Saturday, May 18, Custer High School will bid farewell to the 64 graduating seniors who make up this year’s class of 2024. The commencement ceremony will be at 2 p.m. in the Armory building.
At the start of the ceremony superintendent Mark Naugle will deliver a welcome address to students and their guests.

CVFD gets new truck, more upgrades needed

With costs rising in many markets and industries in the country, many have had to cut back and delay spending. Unfortunately, this is also true for emergency services, but still, Custer Volunteer Fire Department has just rolled out a brand new fire truck.
The new truck has been in the making for about four years, which is the average time it takes for manufacturers to design and actually build the trucks. Custer’s trucks are also custom ordered to clear the low 10-foot doors of the fire station.

Whittaker, Miller are council candidates

Incumbent Dixie Whittaker is being challenge by Bruce Miller for a two-year term on the Custer City Council during the June election. The winner will represent Ward I.
Whittaker has served on the council for six years, and said she seeks reelection because she wants to continue to represent her community as a council member and utilize her prior council experience and knowledge to benefit the community.

Koontz, Serviss are Hermosa candidates

Two Town of Hermosa residents will vie for a two-year term on the Hermosa Board of Trustees during the June 4 election, as both Kelburn Koontz and Aaron Serviss seek to replace former board president Jerry Styles, who resigned in March.
Koontz is a proposal engineer who has lived in Hermosa for the past two-and-a-half years, who  was recently appointed to the board to replace Styles, and would like the opportunity to continue making headway on the important issues facing the town as part of the town board.
