Rangers wrap up season at SoDak 16

Although the Hill City High School volleyball team was hoping to make it to state, they fell to the Dell Rapids Quarriers Nov. 7 as part of SoDak 16 play. 
Going into the game the Rangers were actually feeling very prepared. Head coach Allie Henderson said, “We watched a lot of film and were pretty comfortable with their style of play. We practiced specifically on how to combat their strengths and target their weaknesses. When it came down to it, Dell Rapids was just bigger and faster than we were. They obviously learned how to combat our strengths as well.”

The Hill City High School volleyball team was looking to return to the Class A State Volleyball tournament via a victory over the Dell Rapids Quarriers last night in Chamberlain as part of SoDak 16 play. Results of the match were unavailable as of press time.
The Rangers returned to the SoDak 16 via a three sets to one victory in the second round of Region 8A play last Thursday at Gins Gym. The Rangers won 25-14, 19-25, 25-20, 25-21.

Rangers blast ’Diggers in region play

One down, one to go as the Hill City High School volleyball team continues its march to the SoDak 16, and ultimately, the goal of qualifying for the Class A State Volleyball tournament.
The Rangers took the first step in that march Monday evening when they dispatched of Lead-Deadwood in three quick sets 25-8, 25-10, 25-9 to win its first round matchup of Region 8A play. The Rangers entered region play as the second seed.

Ranger boys state champions

They won conference, they won regions and now the Hill City High School Ranger boys won the Class A State Cross Country Championship Oct. 21.
“We’d seen it all year,” said head coach Joe Noyes. “We knew where the boys were and what they were capable of. We just wanted them to do it on the biggest stage, and they rose to that challenge and handled it in an impressive fashion.” 

Rangers take on Belle to end season

The Hill City Rangers girls volleyball team wrapped up another winning week beating Custer (25-13, 26-16, 25-13) and Alliance, Neb., (25-16, 25-24, 23-25, 27-25).
“Alliance was a great prep match for our postseason,” said head volleyball coach Allie Henderson. “They are an all around team with a lot of strengths that we had to adjust to. Our first set we came out pretty strong which may have been unexpected for Alliance. They came back stronger in the second and we trailed at some point in all of the remaining sets.” 

Girls win three straight

Winning. That’s the word to describe the Hill City Rangers girls volleyball team after three at-home wins last week against Red Cloud (25-8, 25-11, 25-13), St. Thomas More (25-15, 25-21, 25-11) and Wall (25-7, 30-28, 25-22).
The girls are 22-6 on the season.
The girls played a very technical game against Wall, according to Head Coach Allie Henderson. 

Ranger football season ends

Football season has ended in Hill City with the Rangers losing to the Bison of Hot Springs 6-56. 
“Hot Springs was a really good football team and they are very deserving of the #3 rank in the state right now,” said Head  Football Coach Brett Eckert. He said his team came out and “battled hard” despite “ being really banged up” going in.
“We tried to move the ball through the air and had some great plays passing and also had some other times where the guys were open. We just didn’t convert.”

Rangers score region titles

The Hill City High School Rangers claimed two team titles and two individual titles at the SDHSAA Region 5A Cross Country Meet Oct. 11. 
Due to the impending weather, the meet was held a day early. As a result, the Ranger's recovery time was cut a little short. 
However, head coach Joe Noyes said, "Even though they may have been a little tired, man, they outperformed being tired. So to us as coaches, that's such a great indicator of where we're going to be at the state meet when we're fresh."

Volleyball defeats Red Cloud in three sets

The Hill City Girls High School Volleyball team swept Red Cloud Monday 25-8, 25-11, 25-13.
This brings the team’s record to 20-6 for the season. 
“We really took advantage of Red Cloud’s lack of blocking,” says Head Volleyball Coach Allie Henderson. “We were able to swing hard and straight down with how open the net was. We had the opportunity to focus on our spot serving as well with how many players they had pulled back in to serve and  receive. It was a great game to try different things.”

Ranger boys conference champs

For the first time in Joe Noyes’ 10 years of being the head coach of the Hill City High School cross country team, the Ranger boys won the Black Hills Conference Cross Country Championships at Hart Ranch Oct. 5. Along with this four boys and three girls from Hill City achieved all-conference. 
“That was pretty awesome to check that first goal of championship season,” said Noyes. “I think that the week off of just practice and kind of mentally preparing was the right choice because the kids definitely performed well.”
