Ranger boys beat Broncs, drop the ball with Custer

The Hill City High School Ranger boys basketball team hit the court once again Jan. 16 for a home game against the Belle Fourche Broncs. 
“We came out pretty strong, and got a decent-sized lead right away,” said head coach Laramie Harvey. “Then we kind of treaded water for a while and weren’t able to build up. But then toward the second half of the game, we were able to build a little bit more. 
“We did some good things. I was hoping we would do some things better, but all in all, it was a good game.”

Hanson places third, Faehnrich faces forfeit

The Hill City Wrestling team traveled to two locations this weekend. The girls went to Pierre to the 2024 Governor Girl Wrestling Invite. 
Trystyn Jangula (11-10) placed first in the 138-pound class beating opponents from Stanley County, Todd County and Bon Homme-Scotland-Avon. According to head coach Tanner Davis, this was a junior varsity round robin.
Brittney Hanson (12-3) placed third in her varsity 165-pound class scoring 18 team points for the Rangers.

Ranger girls take down Lead-Deadwood, Sundance

The Hill City High School Ranger girls basketball team claimed two more victories last week. 
To start, the Rangers traveled to Lead-Deadwood High School Jan. 11 for a game against the Golddiggers. Head coach Anna Eckert said, “We had a lot of girls get playing time and each girl stepped up and did what they were asked.”
Maggie Taylor had a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds against Lead-Deadwood. Meanwhile, Alaina Dean chipped in 11 points, and Lillie Ross had 10 points. The Rangers won with a final score of 65-20. 

Ranger boys win two, lose player to injury

The Hill City High School Ranger boys basketball team came away with two wins last week along with some more challenges to face. 
The Rangers started the week by traveling to Lead-Deadwood High School for a game against the Golddiggers Jan. 11. 
“We went into that game expecting to win, and we did,” said head coach Laramie Harvey. However, “We were hoping to not give up so many points and play a little better on the defensive end of the floor.”

Ranger boys defeat Spearfish, Philip

The Hill City High School Ranger boys basketball team had another pair of back to back games last week. 
First, the Rangers traveled to Spearfish for a game against the Spartans Jan. 4. The Spartans beat the Rangers in 2022 and 2023, but the Rangers were ready for a victory. 
According to head coach Laramie Harvey, it was a back and forth game. There were many ties and lead changes, but the Ranger boys stayed composed and kept grinding it out. 

Ranger girls fall to Spearfish, beat Philip

After Christmas break, the Hill City High School Ranger girls basketball team traveled to Spearfish High School for a game against the Spartans Jan. 4. 
Up to this point in the season, the Rangers had won four out of five games, and the Spartans had won three out of five games. 
In 2022, the Rangers beat the Spartans 58-54, and in 2023, the Spartans beat the Rangers 48-25. This year the Spartans won 43-32. 

Faehnrich first at Monster

Hill City High School  Wrestler Tiara Faehnrich (16-2) placed first in her 138-pound class at the Mid Dakota Bride of the Monster in Presho this weekend. Faehnrich scored 30 team points and helped take the team to an eighth-place finish.
Head coach Tanner Davis said things are beginning to make sense to  Faehnrich.
“She is just a few steps away from having it all figured out,” he said. 

Rangers fall to Dakota Valley, West Central

After a Christmas break, the Hill City High School Ranger boys basketball team traveled to the Parkston School District for the Parkston Classic Dec. 29. There the Rangers faced off against the Dakota Valley Panthers.
Up to this point in the season, the Rangers had won three out of four games, and the Panthers had won five games.
“They (the Panthers) are one of the better teams in the state and have a couple of the better players in the state. We just had a hard time stopping one of those players,” said head coach Laramie Harvey.

Ranger girls 10th at Spearfish meet

The Hill City High School girls wrestling team finished 10th in Spearfish  at the Dec. 28 Spearfish Girls Wrestling Invitational.
Daisy Munoz (8-6) placed second and scored 20 team points in  her 145- pound class. Munoz won by fall over Gigi Knapp of Rapid City Central in the quarterfinals. She  defeated Adelyn Bergstrom of Newcastle, Wyo., in the semifinals before losing to Sarah Rickenbach of Hot Springs in the first place match.
Tiara Faehnrich (11-2) placed third in the 138- pound class and scored 14 team points.

Ranger girls take down Cavaliers

The Hill City High School girls basketball team added another victory to its scoreboard for the season during its game against the St. Thomas More (STM) Cavaliers Dec. 19. 
Head coach Anna Eckert said, “I didn’t feel like we played very well against STM. We ended up coming up with the win, but it wasn’t a win that leaves you satisfied.
