Boys win fourth consecutive conference title, girls second

The Custer High School boys Wildcat wrestling team has secured the Black Hills Conference title yet again after Friday’s victory in Hot Springs, this year for the fourth time in a row. The girls did well too, coming home with second place.
“It just goes to show what kind of program we have here,” said head coach Jared Webster.

Wrestlers look for confidence in last meets of season

The Custer High School Wildcat wrestling team had double duty last week with duals with Chadron (Neb.) and Douglas-Rapid City Christian-New Underwood (DRCCNU). Thursday and the Belle Fourche Invitiational over two days Friday and Saturday. At the Belle Fourche Invite, both the girls and boys teams had strong showings with the boys placing third and the girls fifth.
“I believe we could have done a heck of a lot better,” said head coach Jared Webster, saying the team is working on buidling confidence and believing they can win when they step on the mat.

Wildcat girls stun region-leading Rangers in Hill City

Overcoming a 14-point deficit, on the road, to upset the top-ranked region team? That’s big.
Doing it when that top-seeded team was your rivals 12 miles to the north, the Hill City Rangers? Priceless.
Such was the case last Friday evening at Gins Gym in Hill City, as the 6-8 Wildcats did the improbable, knocking off the Rangers on their home court on the back of a balanced scoring attack, relentless effort and a never-say-die attitude that had head coach Tayt Vincent beaming after the game.

Boys fall just short in clash with visiting Comets

A missed shot here. A few fewer turnovers. A different bounce of the ball. A different call.
At the end of the Custer High School basketball team’s 57-55 loss to Rapid City Christian Jan. 23 at the Armory, Custer head coach Paul Kelley was lamenting what could have been had a couple more things gone the Wildcats’ way.
“Even before the game, I told the kids it’s going to be a fist fight,” Kelley said. “They are going to be bumping you, and you’re going to be bumping them. To be a top team, you have to play defense. I thought both teams played pretty darn good defense.”

Girls force 40 turnovers in home rout of Irrigators

It was an amount of turnovers that would have made a bakery proud.
The Custer High School girls basketball team was at peak pestering last Thursday evening at the Armory, as the Wildcats—subbing in fresh waves of players liberally—trapped, poked, pressed and prodded the visiting Newell Irrigators into 40 turnovers during a 69-47 win. The 40 ’Gator turnovers led to 31 Wildcat points.

Wildcats dispatch of Hill City, scrape by Wall

The Custer High School boys basketball team improved its record to 9-3 on the season with a pair of wins last week, defeating Hill City last Friday evening before defeating Wall for the second time this season Saturday in Wall.
While the Wildcats easily dispatched of the Eagles in the team’s first game of the season during the Lakota Nation Invitational Saturday wasn’t nearly the same, as the Wildcat fell behind early before taking the lead and holding on to defeat the Eagles 52-50.

Boys fourth in Winner, girls 10th in Pierre

The Custer Wildcat boys wrestling team took fourth over the weekend at their meet in Winner, with two wrestlers coming home top of the podium.
Head coach Jared Webster said the team “wrestled very well,” despite some being out with illness or injury.
The girls team wrestled at the Governor Girls Invite in Pierre, taking 10th out of 30 teams.
While Jessica Hite was the only wrestler to place in the tournament, eaning first place. The rest of the team also won matches and scored points to help the team toward their 10th-place finish.

Wildcats defeat Cavaliers for first time in 10 years

Forget just defeating the St. Thomas More Cavaliers for the first time in a decade—the Custer High School boys basketball manhandled the Cavaliers.
The Wildcats put an emphatic end to a 14-game losing streak to the Cavaliers that dated back to February of 2014, thumping the fifth-ranked Cavaliers 60-46 in a game the ’Cats controlled from start to finish and gave the ’Cats a signature win for the season.
It was also Custer’s first home win against the Cavaliers since Jan. 15, 2011, when the Wildcats defeated More 38-35 largely on the back of 22 completed free throws.

Wildcat girls fall to More, Red Cloud

The Custer High School basketball team faced two losses last week aginst the St. Thomas More Cavaliers and the Red Cloud Crusaders.
The first quarter of that game was most brutal for the ’Cats, as they scored only two points, the team’s lowest-scoring quarter of the game, while the Crusaders had their best quarter, scoring 21 points.
By the end of the half, the  score stood at 38-9, with the Wildcats down.
“They really had us out of sorts,” said Custer head coach Tayt Vincent.
So out of sorts, the team turned the ball over 24 times in the first half.

Cold weather gives wrestlers more road time than mat time

What was supposed to be a busy week for the Custer High School Wildcat wrestling team turned a bit calmer as the frigid temperatures reduced its workload to just a couple duals with Kingsbury County and Philip over Thursday and Friday. The Black Hills Conference tournament, scheduled for Saturday in Hot Springs, was postponed and many teams were not able to make the duals in Philip and Kingsbury County.
