Girls split a pair of games at Chadron tourney

It was one big win and a close loss for the Custer High School girls basketball team last weekend in Chadron, as the Wildcats continued their early-season trend of alternating wins and losses as they blasted Hemingford, Neb., 64-24 in the opening round of the George Watson Rotary Club Classic before losing to Chadron, Neb., 52-45 in the championship game. Both games were played in the Chicoine Center on the campus of Chadron State College.

Boys cruise to tournament title

The Custer High School boys basketball team made it two straight championships at the Chadron Rotary Club George Watson Holiday Classic last weekend in Chadron, Neb., as the team defeated the host Cardinals 62-55 in the championship game, the team’s second victory in the tournament in as many days.
Custer head coach Paul Kelley said the Wildcats got off to a slow start against the Cardinals, including eight turnovers in the first quarter.

Wrestling team dispatches to three tournaments

It was a busy week last week for the Custer High School wrestling team, as it traveled to three different locations to compete.
Part of the team headed to Fargo, N.D., for the Rumble on the Red, while last Thursday the girls were at the Spearfish Invitational. On Friday the rest of the wrestlers competed in the Harding County Invitational.
In Fargo the Wildcats had two wrestlers place, led by Trey Weiss’s third-place finish in the 121-pound weight class.

Boys grab fifth at Lakota Nation Invitational

Three wins by large margins and one close loss.
Those were the results for the Custer High School boys basketball team at last week’s Lakota Nation Invitational, a result that brought the team a fifth- place finish in the tournament’s top bracket and a smile to head coach Paul Kelley’s face.
“Coming out of LNI 3-1 is huge,” Kelley said. “Only one team comes out 4-0. We should have big grins on our face and be excited. Are there things we need to improve on? Absolutely. But we feel pretty good about our first week into the season.”

Wildcat girls place sixth at Lakota Nation

Both the Custer High School girls basketball team and its new head coach, Tayton Vincent, got their feet wet with their first action of the 2023-24 season last week at the Lakota Nation Invitational.
The Wildcats played their way to a 2-2 record at the tournament, alternating wins and losses on their way to a sixth place finish in the tournament’s top bracket.

Boys win Holiday Extravaganza, girls third at LNI

The Custer High School wrestling team had another packed weekend of matches with the Custer Triangular last Thursday, Hot Springs Duals on Friday and the Hot Springs Holiday Extravaganza on Saturday. The girls team also participated in the Lakota Nation Invitational (LNI) in Rapid City over the weekend and took third place.
Custer handily won its duals against Belle Fourche  (58-22) and Lead-Deadwood (76-6). In the dual against the Belle Fourche Broncs, they lost only four matches, winning the other 10. Against Lead-Deadwood, Custer won all but one match.

Wildcat boys deep, experienced

The Custer High School boys basketball team is young no more.
Blessed with experience, depth, speed, size (and dare we whisper, shooting), the Wildcats have high expectations as they embark on the 2023-24 season, beginning this week at the Lakota Nation Invitational.
“Things have been going pretty well,” head coach Paul Kelley said of early-season practices. “We’re pretty excited about the upcoming season. We just know it’s a tough road ahead of us. Things are looking really good. Our expectations are quite high.”

Wrestling competitive in Rapid City

The Custer High School wrestling team competed in the large and competitive Rapid City Invitational this past weekend, with the boys earning seventh place out of 46 and the girls earning 10th of 42. The tournament brings together teams from six different states. This was the highest the teams have ever placed in the tournament before.
The boys and girls teams both had wrestlers make the podium at the meet, even competing with larger Class A teams from across the state and beyond.
“The kids wrestled tough. I was very impressed with them,” said head coach Jared Webster.

Wrestling team starts season with series of wins

The Custer High School wrestling team returned to the mat with a bang last week with duals on Thursday and the Bill Young Invitational on Friday, both at home in Custer.
The ’Cats took down each of the three teams in Thursday night’s duals and by large margins, at least doubling the scores of their opponents. In its dual against Hot Springs, the team won 66-12, and again over Harding County (63-12), and yet again against Burke-Gregory (52-26).

Girls look to replace bulk of scoring

About 75 percent.
That’s the amount of scoring new head coach Tayton Vincent estimates is gone from the Custer High School girls basketball team from a year ago.
Gone are multiple-time all conference performers Ally Cass and Alice Sedlacek, as well as fellow starter Ramsey Karim and sixth girl Allie Kelley.
Returning are two proven players, a few tested players, and a slew of inexperienced players, all of whom will take to the court for the first time this season Monday at Rapid City Christian.
