Hermosa gets unusual visitor

Tourist season brings folks to Custer from all walks of life. Visitors come from all corners of the globe and are of all different backgrounds—species too apparently. One such visitor, a vagrant moose, has been the talk of the east side of Custer County recently.
The moose, which some have begun to refer to as “Marty,” was first spotted Tuesday, June 4 near Hermosa between Hwys. 36 and 40.
Angie Pemble, who lives in that area, was one of the lucky people to see the moose.  
She was at her house when she said it was “just crusing through my pasture.”

Commission hears fine appeal

A protested fine may be passed on to a contractor instead of the fined citizen as a result of a discussion held at the June 5 meeting of the Custer County Commission.
Steve Davis, a county resident, came before the commission to protest a $2,000 fine he was levied from the Custer County Planning office for putting in a holding tank in 2021 without a permit.
Davis told the commission he was unaware he needed a permit for the work, which was done on an existing sewer system.

Small towns bring on big art

Locals and visitors to the Hill City area can enjoy two art shows right down the street from each other this weekend.
Crazy Horse Memorial  will showcase the 33rd annual Gift From Mother Earth art show with over 20 exhibitors selling a wide variety of artwork. The three-day show and sale begins June 14 at 8 a.m. although artists will be on hand setting up June 13 for those who want to purchase early.

New citizens to be naturalized June 14

On June 14, Mount Rushmore National Memorial will host a Naturalization Ceremony in honor of Flag Day. The National Park Service, the U.S. District Court for the District of South Dakota, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will welcome more than 150 people from over 40 countries.

Low primary turnout sparks concern

Every ballot cast in Lyman County for Tuesday’s primary election was worth $134 in taxpayer money, Lyman County auditor Kalli Houchin estimated. 
Only 67 people voted in the south-central South Dakota county—just over 6 percent of registered voters. Yet the county spent about $9,000 on ballot printing, hiring election workers and other costs.
In Hughes County, which includes the capital city of Pierre, each of its 304 ballots cast was worth roughly $70 in taxpayer funds. The county had less than 5 percent voter turnout.

‘It’s not pancakes and firemen’s ball anymore’

The days of funding fire departments through pancake feeds, firemen’s balls and car washes are over.
That is the message being delivered by members of the Custer Volunteer Fire Department as they seek support in creating a new taxing district to ensure fire protection for those within the City of Custer and many acres of land surrounding the city, and it was the message delivered once again by those members to City of Custer Mayor Bob Brown and three Custer City Council members who gathered for a special council meeting last Tuesday at Custer City Hall.

Commission hears lien chase update

A position created by the Custer County Commission last October has netted the county around $10,000 in satisfied liens, and the need to continue the position is evident, the person in charge of the collections told the Custer County Commission at the commission’s May 22 meeting.
At the meeting, McKinsey Scroggin, the county’s accounts/receivable/lien clerk discussed the progress she has made in the seven months since she was hired. The position, while initially temporary, is one the county can no longer afford to go without.
