The Custer County Chronicle is planning an exterior Christmas decoration contest in which we want you to submit either your decorated home or the home of an outdoor display you enjoy. Only homes located in Custer County are eligible.

Teasley on trial

Circuit Judge Scott Bogue says he will issue a written opinion in the coming days after hearing over two hours of testimony Tuesday, Nov. 19, in a small claims case filed by a Rapid City couple against Kevin and Cathy Teasley of Custer and their woodworking business, It’s Rustic, LLC. 
The court trial began in a Custer courtroom Tuesday at 11:10 a.m. and continued until about 1:20 p.m. with one 10-minute recess.

No byway approval yet by county

Custer County Commission support for the proposed Crazy Horse Scenic Byway will have to wait at least two more weeks, as the commission at its Nov. 20 meeting once again declined to offer its official support for the byway until it is sure county landowners along the byway won’t have property rights taken away.
The issue initially came up at the commission’s Nov. 6 meeting, when approval was sought for the byway proposed by the Oglala Sioux Tribe (OST). It would include parts of Hwy. 40 and 16A in Custer County.

Flood map open house Dec. 3

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the City of Custer will host a public open house Dec. 3 at the Custer County Courthouse Annex Pine Room at 5 p.m. regarding flood map changes within the county and city limits at the end of next year.
City  and county residents and business owners are encouraged to review changes to their flood risk and secure cost-savings on flood insurance. City officials say it’s important for residents and business owners to understand what these changes mean and how they may benefit from cost savings on their flood insurance.

Airport decision causes turbulance

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
That was the message delivered by members of the Custer County aviation community to the Custer County Commission at the commission’s Nov. 20 meeting, as those members pleaded with the commission to renew the contract of current airport manager Brenden Hendrickson.

Sheriff's office denies wrongdoing in lawsuit response

The defendants in a lawsuit filed by a Custer County woman over her kidnapping and rape in September 2017 have denied allegations in a civil lawsuit that was federally filed in August.

Collision was ‘nightmarish’

A Custer couple returning home Thursday evening from a trip to Denver came upon a grisly scene on Hwy. 89 near Argyle after a pickup truck collided with and killed a black Angus cow in the early evening hours. 
Frank and Audrey Carroll were headed home at about 6 p.m. and had traveled a few miles north from Minnekahta Junction when they came upon two vehicles stopped in the roadway and what appeared to be several “big bodies” littering the road. 

City floats ideas on wastewater

If the City of Custer’s wastewater treatment plant were a person, it would likely be retired, living in Arizona and staring at the possibility of moving into assisted living in a few years.
The expected “design life” of a typical wastewater treatment plant (before rehab/replacement is needed) is around 20 years (although they will last longer) and, although the city’s plant continues to chug along, it is close to the end of its design life, as it is 32 years old.

Survey results: Parking key issue at Sylvan Lake

When sifting through the many survey responses regarding the Sylvan Lake Master Plan project, it doesn’t take long to find a theme: parking is an issue.
And parking concerns bubbling to the surface of the master plan surveys shouldn’t be surprising, either, as the lake’s somewhat limited parking, combined with its popularity and frequent long-term parking for hikes to Black Elk Peak and weddings, all lead to frequent parking issues.

OBHC receives silver screen spotlight

Last summer, Pat Baird of Operation Black Hills Cabin received a phone call from a large newspaper in New York City (she isn’t sure which one) with the news that it wanted to feature Operation Black Hills Cabin (OBHC).
Interviews were conducted and information was sent to the newspaper over a couple of months. When it came time for the article to run, the newspaper called with another request: it wanted a $100,000 ad taken out by OBHC. Needless to say, that didn’t happen.
