Regional Health to partner with Mayo

Regional Health announced it will become Monument Health in January. It will continue to employ more than 4,500 physicians and caregivers in 20 Western South Dakota and Eastern Wyoming communities after the name change.
“Our new name, Monument Health, will more accurately represent who we are to the region,” said Regional Health president and chief executive officer Paulette Davidson. 

Vets honored at 25th program

For the 25th year in a row, Custer School District honored those who have served and are serving in the nation’s armed services at its annual Veterans Day program Monday. 
Hundreds of children and adults packed the Custer Armory at 2 p.m. to hear over an hour of songs by students in all grades, patriotic music by the high school band, poems and readings honoring veterans and a speech by guest speaker Kevin Morello of Black Hawk. 

GFP eyes state park fee increase

The S.D. Game, Fish & Parks (GFP) Commission unanimously approved increases to its state park entrance and camping fees recently, which GFP officials say are needed to cover maintenance and flood damage costs at the parks.
The increase will now go to the legislative Rules Review Committee for approval. If it receives approval, the fee increases could go into effect Jan. 1.

More moves for Custer businesses

If you walk into the office looking for Paul DeHaan at First  Western  Insurance in Custer, you won’t find him or the insurance company, but you will find the offices of Jim Meyer of Edward Jones at 40 North 5th Street. 
DeHaan retired months ago when First Western Insurance became HUB International in May, represented now by agent Craig Comer whose office is just across the hall from Edward Jones.
Edward Jones moved its offices from 449 Mt. Rushmore Road to the former home of the First Interstate Bank drive-up building in mid-October this year.

Fire study to be fine-tuned

A forthcoming study into the feasibility and costs of a fire district, districts or countywide fire authority in Custer County will need to be closely scrutinized and fine-tuned, said county fire and emergency officials at the Nov. 6 meeting of the Custer County Commission.

Deadline looms for flood victims

The deadline is rapidly approaching for those Aug. 2 flood victims who still want to get their names on the list for assistance. 
A Nov. 20 deadline to apply for this assistance was set at the Nov. 7 meeting of the Custer County Long Term Recovery Group (LTRG). Deadline for filling out paperwork is Nov. 27.

HAHA  requests more county money

The Hermosa Area Historical Society (HAHA) has big plans for the 1889 schoolhouse it calls home. But to make those plans reality, members told the Custer County Commission at the commission’s Nov. 6 meeting, it needs some help.

Trying to find normal temperatures

“It’s not even Thanksgiving, but it already feels like January!” 
If you have found yourself saying something like that in the last couple of weeks, you’re not alone and you are also absolutely correct.
According to the National Weather Service office in Rapid City, the average temperature in Custer for the month of October was only 35.1 degrees, which was 7.8 degrees below normal for the 10th month of the year. 

Veterans Day events set

Veterans Day is approaching, and with it comes a variety of events around Custer County to honor those who served the United States through military service.
As always, the centerpiece of the day will be the annual Veterans Day program put on by Custer School District next Monday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m. at the Armory. This year marks the 25th annual ceremony.
