Custer City Council receives flood update

As operations switch from a response effort to a recovery effort regarding the Aug. 2 flood, Custer County Emergency Management director Mike Carter came before the Custer City Council at the council’s Aug. 19 meeting, to give the council an update on both the response and recovery, as well as compliments regarding how well city staff worked with county staff during the flood response.

Caster resigns

Patty Caster has resigned as the department head of the Custer County Department of Equalization (DOE)  effective Aug. 8. The resignation came one day after she was put on administrative leave at the end of the Custer County Commission’s Aug. 7 meeting.
At that meeting, the commission emerged from executive session and unanimously approved placing Caster on administrative leave. The following day Caster submitted a letter of resignation, which had only one line asking the commission to accept her resignation effective immediately.

Flood road repair starts at $200k

In a summer that has seen Mother Nature land continuous body blows to numerous gravel roads in Custer County, the Aug. 2 flood that raced from the French Creek watershed through the county before blasting its way through the city of Custer delivered the knockout blow to some of those roads, causing thousands more dollars in damage along the way.

Sheriff’s office deals with strange goings-on

The Rally hadn’t yet started and it wasn’t even a full moon, but the Custer County Sheriff’s Office has had to deal with some strange goings-on in the recent days. 
On Saturday, July 27, deputies responded to a report of a Chevy Lumina that had pulled into a rural driveway on Wildlife Loop Road east of Custer State Park at a high rate of speed at about 11 a.m. After bringing the car to a halt, the driver reportedly took off running into a field and disappeared.

City not tolerating violations

After emerging from executive session at its Aug. 5 meeting, the Custer City Council unanimously voted to proceed with enabling city attorney Chris Beesley to proceed with enforcement of the zoning ordinance and conditional use permits or violations.
Although the violation could technically affect various kinds of violations, the most closely watched will be Vacation Rentals By Owner (VBRO), for which the entire process of enacting the new rules was done.

Taking the wet out of Wildcat Stadium

The Custer School District Board of Education is taking steps to correct the groundwater and runoff problems at Wildcat Stadium with drainage work to begin as early as this fall. 

It’s back to school time

The roar of motorcycles still lingers in the air and the roads are clogged with summer travelers, but the first day of school in Custer is just one week away on Wednesday, Aug. 21. 
For teachers and support staff, their big day is even closer. All staff will meet at the Hermosa School gymnasium for a back-to-school inservice on Monday morning. The school offices in Custer will be closed in the morning for staff to attend the inservice.
Even now, the calendar is crammed with events to prepare for the start of the new school year.

Parks and rec seeks projects, help

There are plenty of recreation opportunities in Custer, and plenty more that could be brought to life, say members of the City of Custer’s Parks, Recreation and Forestry Committee. However, to make those ideas a reality, they say, they need a driving force behind them.
