Chase named middle school track coach of the year

The Hill City School District has yet another award-winning coach. Brady Chase was recently named the 2024 Area 4A Junior High/Middle School Track and Field Assistant Coach of the Year by the South Dakota Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association. 
Chase ran cross country and track all four years in high school and his freshman year of college.
“I was always in all sports,” said Chase. “It was just time to hang out with your friends, and I got lucky enough to find success in it.” 

Rangers putt into top six at state

Golf season officially ended with the Hill City Rangers taking home sixth  place at the South Dakota Class B State Tournament  that took place at the Brookings Country Club  June 3-4.
The Hill City Fire Department gave the team a send off at 9 a.m. June 1.
“It felt so good,” said coach Josh Daiss about the send off and community support throughout the season. “It made us feel special. We felt it across the state.” 

Ranger boys 4x800 relay team are state champions

With 26 athletes, the Hill City High School Ranger track and field team took on the South Dakota Class A State Track & Field Meet May 23-25. 
Although some expectations were not met, the meet held a state championship win, several personal records and a few surprises. 
“We knew it was going to be tough for our boys because we had a small group of guys that had to score most of our points. That was kind of asking a lot of them, but they still had some really good things take place,” said head coach Joe Noyes. 

Back-to-back champs geared to tee off at state

The Hill City Rangers golf team has once again taken home the Class 6B Region championship. 
“Last  year  was the first year the  Hill City golf team took a tegion championship. Now we are back-to-back winners,” coach Josh Daiss said.
The Rangers defeated by one stroke both the Wall Eagles and the Philip Scotties,  both of whom tied for second place.
Daiss called the region competition tight and “leaps and bounds’ more challenging than the last several years of play.

Twenty-six Rangers headed to state meet

The Hill City High School Ranger track and field team took on the Last Chance Meet in Custer May 16 to improve some event times. 
“It was a pretty toned-down meet,” said head coach Joe Noyes. “We were in a really good position to not have to be overly aggressive with this meet and being able to save it for the state meet.” 
Noyes said they did not overly tax the athletes, but they did enough to tell where everyone was and where they would be at the state meet. 

Rangers dance with Eagles at Belle Fourche

The Rangers golf team played two tournaments this week, taking first on May 10 at the Belle Fourche Country Club for the Marjean Huber Memorial Tournament hosted by Bison.
The Rangers captured the team title by edging out the Wall Eagles by one stroke with a team total of 265. Individually, Zane Messick carded an 83 and a fourth-place finish. Leo Daiss followed in fifth, firing an 86. Breylon Rahn shot a 96 and Adolph Tyler followed closely with a 97.   

Rangers all-conference in every event group

At the Black Hills Conference Track and Field Championships May 10, the Hill City High School Ranger track and field team had boys and girls place all- conference in every event group. Overall, the girls scored 68 points, and the boys scored 102 points. 
Head coach Joe Noyes said, “It was the most points we had scored on the girls side and the boys side.”
In the 200, Caleb Sobolik placed eighth at 24.02. Then, in the 800, Brandon Escalante won with a state-leading time. 

Rangers break school records

Although the Discount Fuel/Gas and Go High School Invitational in Kadoka was canceled due to cold and rainy weather, the Hill City High School Ranger track and field team took advantage of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays by breaking multiple school records.
“We had a really nice weekend at Howard Wood and had a lot of good things happen,” said head coach Joe Noyes. “That’s a two-day meet that’s kind of our premier meet of the season before state. It’s tough to get in. Kids have to run a qualifying time, or as a relay, you have to be in the top 24 of Class A to get in.”

Short course for Rangers

The Hill City Rangers golf team traveled to Fort Pierre for the Stanley County Invite April 26.
Precipitation meant the team could not play the full course, but instead played the short front-nine twice, turning the course into a par-58 for 18 holes. Despite the cold weather, the wind and the rain held off until the last few holes.
“It was an interesting morning traveling in the snow to the tournament. The Rangers left early on Friday morning in snow flurries,” said head coach Josh Daiss, who said the temperatures were in the mid 40s during the tournament.

Rangers snag a meet between cancellations

After the great weather at the beginning of the season, the Hill City High School Ranger Track and Field team had two meets get canceled due to weather. 
Head coach Joe Noyes said jokingly, “This is on me. I jinxed it.” 
However, between storms a group of Rangers traveled to Belle Fourche for the Northern Hills Invite April 23.
