Roughly 10 years ago this time (I cannot remember the exact date) I got my driver’s license.

Now we in Maryland need to wait a little longer than those in South Dakota to get our license (if I recall correctly when I got mine you had to be 16 and 6 months), but I still remember that feeling — that feeling of true freedom and the first time as a youth that you are handed adult responsibilities.

Is there such thing as too PC?

The Washington Redskins are no more. Sigh.

Not that I care about football. But I do care about this gone too far PC (politically correct) world in which I suddenly find myself.

No, being PC isn’t new. But the extreme PC that has been oddly around since the zombie apocalypse is way out of my comfort zone. In fact, I am offended by it! And that’s my right, right?  I mean because suddenly what is or is not offensive has become a huge deal.

We have a whole slew of holidays coming up; don’t you know?

That’s right! According to Nationaldaycalendar.com, July 8 is National Freezer Pop Day! July 9 is Cow Appreciation Day! July 10 is National Kitten Day and National Pina Colada Day!

I could literally go on and on about how every day is a national something day.

Former logger: forest in trouble

Forest management mistakes can no longer be swept under the rug. The recent editorial by Dave Mertz points out that there is not enough standing timber left in the Black Hills (BH) to sustain the current timber harvest. He claims a great deal of data gathered on the part of the Forest Service (FS) supports this.  The recent fires, the horrible mountain pine beetle infestation, along with the current rate of harvest will run us out of timber to harvest at this current rate.

The library is open! Our hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please enter at the north door by the book drop. Please put all returns in the book drop because we are quarantining library material for a minimum of three days. We are asking that masks be worn and that you use the provided hand sanitizer.

I did something the other day I never thought I would do in a million years. I was so nervous about trying it, but figured “what the heck?” As the kids used to say: YOLO.
My heart pounded just thinking about it, and I was kind of gripped with fear. As adventurous as I am, this was way out of my comfort zone! And considering a low speed version of this made me sick….I had to put on my big girl pants to commit. Before I tell you the outcome let me tell you what I did.

Hopefully, you all read the interview in last week’s paper that I did with Hill City’s newest author, Jamie Duprey.
If you didn’t, here’s a quick synopsis: Duprey chronicles her experience playing high school basketball in the small town of Chester, Mont. Her book, “The Yellow Sports Bra,” tells the story of triumph, grief and all the emotions of not only being a high schooler but being a standout athlete in a small town.

Ice cream: a love story

While technically summer has not yet begun, my quest to try not to eat ice cream every day has already begun. This is a very difficult challenge for me. I admit...I am an addict.

I also live in a tiny tourist town with, like, a gazillion ice cream shops. I am also an ice cream snob. During the height of the zombie apocalypse when I needed a fix of my usual, chocolate ice cream in a dish with rainbow sprinkles, it was about 6 p.m. on a Saturday.

Why Pennington County needs a wheel tax

It’s been two years now since I made the decision to move to South Dakota.

In those two years, a lot has happened. But, something happened during these past two years I thought would never happen.

First, a little background. Yes, I was born in Philadelphia. I consider myself a Philadelphian first and foremost.

I am proud to be from the City of Brotherly Love. Some of my best memories have been made in and around Philadelphia and the greater metro area we called the Delaware Valley.
