Meet your Hill City School Board candidates

There are two seats up for grabs for the Hill City School District Board of Education. 
Incumbent  Carmen Ronish describes her occupation as a controller. She has been a resident of the Hill City School District for 23 Years and has a son in the district finishing his eighth grade year.
Both Jacob Rapp and Karen Street are also running for the open seats. 
Rapp has lived in the Hill City School District for “roughly” 25 years and has two daughters that attend Hill City Schools.

Six Republicans seek seat in District 30 House

A crowded field of Republicans will tangle for two seats in the South Dakota House of Representatives during this  June 4, with incumbent Trish Lander joined in the field by five other candidates for two, two-year terms in the house. The other seat open belonged to Dennis Krull, who chose not to seek reelection.
The two GOP winners of the primary election will advance to this fall’s general election, where they will face Democrat Susan Scheirbeck of Hill City.

Sunset Creek road discussion continues

Hill City Council alderman Ethan Walker led a discussion about the Sunset Creek roads during the Hill City Common Council meeting May 13. 
On April 10, city officials walked Sunset Creek with AE2S PE project engineer Callen Hecker, who specializes in roads. 
The goal was to walk the neighborhood and identify what could be done with the allocated $400,000 from the settlement agreement. These funds were placed in an account to accrue interest and have gained $4,400 in 90 days. 

Scholarship will honor Kaitie Leising

Keystone is gearing up to honor one of its former deputies, Kaitie Leising, with a memorial scholarship fundraiser event.
Leising was just 29 years old when she was fatally shot during a DUI traffic stop in Glenwood, Wis., in early May 2023. 
Raised in Chadron, Neb., Leising went to school at Black Hills State University, majoring in psychology. At a very early age, Leising knew she wanted to go into law enforcement.

Proposed school budget presented

The Hill City School Board (HCSB) discussed next year’s budget at its May 13 meeting. 
“We want to be really conscientious of how we use taxpayer dollars,” said district business Manager Cassandra Ott. Ott said the budget looks very similar to previous years but there are two differences that taxpayers might notice. One is a suggestion to lower the levy in  the special education fund while still serving students at the same level. 

Chase runs in Boston Marathon

On April 15 Brady Chase achieved his dream of competing in the 128th Boston Marathon. 
Chase is the Hill City Elementary School third grade teacher and the Hill City Middle School girls basketball and track coach. When he started coaching track in 2021, Chase wanted to stay in shape and run with the students. So he started running eight to 10 miles a day and going for a 20 to 25-mile long run on the weekend. 

Affordable housing options discussed

“Lack of attainable, affordable housing isn’t a liberal or conservative issue. It’s a basic human need that needs to be addressed in our community,” said Hill City development services coordinator Dani Schade at the Hill City Planning and Zoning Commission (PZC) meeting May 6. 
Schade said the Dakota Institute CEO stated the average first-time homebuyers can expect to spend two-fifths of their pre-tax income on a monthly payment for housing, “which up to this point has been unheard of.”

Biker blessing this Saturday

That is the message being delivered at the third annual biker blessing taking place May 18 at the Little White  Church in Hill City. 
The message is being delivered this year by Tony Benn, who considers himself a non-rider. Benn isn’t a pastor. But he is an extrovert and wanted to be a part of this year’s event and share the message that anything that is good, like riding a motorcycle or being outdoors or enjoying the gift of a ride with friends, comes from God. 

Nichols, Doaty vie for mayor

After the appointment of Mike Verchio following the resignation of Kathy Skorzewski, Hill City once again has a race for the position of Hill City Mayor.
On June 4 residents can vote between Tana Nichols and Stefanie Doaty. The winner will serve a two-year term in office.
Nichols has been a resident of Hill City for almost 30 years and is currently the manager of Hill City Harley Davidson. She also served four terms on the Hill City Common Council from 2000-08.

Hwy. 244 project delayed into June

Highway 244 near the KOA, which was set to reopen May 3, is delayed.
According to South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) project engineer Jason  Baker, “We will not meet the May 3 anticipated date. We are going to try to open the roadway to traffic mid-May, but not later than May 24. However, construction activities will still be occurring outside the traveled way through mid-June.”
