McNulty president of Keystone board

Keystone’s May 1 town board meeting began with a canvassing of the April 30 town trustee election. Board members thanked the poll workers and David Cofoid and Lynette Tyon were sworn in as new trustees. Casey McNulty was approved as the board president with trustee Sandi McLain voting against the measure.

Deputy Waldrop talks scam and crime safety

Scams are real, dangerous and happening to people in Hill City. This was a primary focus of Pennington County Sheriff’s Office senior deputy Sheriff Jim Waldrop’s annual safety talk at the Hill City Center May 2. Waldrop has been with the sherriff’s office for 15 years and in Hill City for four years.
“I am really getting really passionate about people getting ripped off by scams, and it’s bad,” said Waldrop.

Fatal crash near Keystone

An 87-year-old man died Wednesday afternoon, April 24, in a single-vehicle crash three miles west of Keystone just before 2 p.m.
Preliminary crash information indicates Henry J. Douglass, the driver  of a 2023 Nissan Terrain was traveling eastbound on  Hwy. 244 when the vehicle left the roadway, entering the south ditch. The vehicle struck an embankment which caused the vehicle to roll, coming to final rest on its top. A seat belt was in use. The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

Cofoid wins Keystone election

Keystone voters came out in droves for the redo election for town board trustee.
The new election featured the same candidates, incumbent Matt Fullilove and challenger David Cofoid.
Fullilove won the original election by a mere one vote but because incorrect ballots were printed and used town officials petitioned a judge to allow a redo election. The town even opted for a new election board for the April 30 contest.
This time 139 people cast votes, nearly 40 more than at the original election.
It was called “record turnout.”

Hearts of the Hills honored in chamber awards ceremony

Always inspiring—that is how Hill City Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Janet Wetovick-Bily described Hill City at the chamber’s annual reception, meeting and awards presentation April 27. 
During the event, 11 such inspiring people, businesses and organizations were honored for their contributions to the community. 
“We get to recognize and celebrate some extraordinary people, extraordinary members for their excellence and exemplary efforts in 2023,” said Wetovick-Bily. 

Wastewater Facility Master Plan approved unanimously

After presenting their recommendations for the water facility at the April 8 meeting, Jim Jones and Joe Nobel with City of Hill City engineer AE2S returned to city hall to present the Wastewater Facility Master Plan at the Hill City Common Council meeting April 22. 
A small community planning grant was filed to help cover the cost of this master plan. The only action requested was that the council approve the plan so it could go to the state and close out the $10,000 grant.

Bringing history to life in Keystone

The Living History Program at the Keystone Museum and School is getting revamped.
The program was suggested when the museum began in 1983 but officially took shape a few years later. It had been run most recently by Bonita Ley, who took over some time in the 1990s. Museum director Casey Sullivan said Ley was “dedicated to her craft”  and was also passionate about it.
Sullivan says the museum was blessed to have Ley at the helm of this program for as long as she was.
“She kept it afloat for so many years,” he  said.

Prevailer earn awards at contest

Opinion pieces, news writing and special section were among the categories the Hill City Prevailer News was honored for at the most recent gathering of the South Dakota NewsMedia Association (SDNA).
The Hill City Prevailer News received six awards all told last Friday, April 26, as part of the Better News Media contest, one event at the 141st annual SDNA convention. The Prevailer was entered in the category for all weekly newspapers with a circulation under 1,300.

Concerns brings new poll workers

Voters in Keystone will notice new poll workers at the redo election April 30. This came as a result of accusations at the April 17 meeting of the Keystone Town Board of Trustees in which a handful of residents voiced concern over improprieties.
Those accusations came from Trinity Rapp and Tammy Hunsaker after trustee Nikki Ball talked about election conduct, including placement of candidate signs. 
Ball has worked numerous elections in the past.

CCC museum wins 2024 Governor’s Awards for History

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Museum of South Dakota at the Hill City Visitor Information Center (VIC) received the 2024 Governor’s Awards for History from the South Dakota Historical Society. 
Every year the historical society gives an award to a nonprofit and a for-profit organization “who exhibit meritorious endeavors in the field of history in South Dakota,” according to the website.
