Artists praise arts council for show

It was a beautiful weekend for the Hill City Arts Council’s (HCAC) annual Fine Arts in the Hills (FAITH) Show and Sale June 14-16. 
This year’s show featured 19 artists proficient in an extensive variety of mediums. Some artists were from Hermosa, Rapid City, Hill City and Custer. Others traveled from across South Dakota or even across the country coming from Montana, Minnesota, Wyoming and Arizona for the show. 

Keystone water is good to go

Well three in Keystone is arsenic free. That is according to town public works supervisor Jerry Przybylski, who shared the news at the June 5 Keystone Town Board meeting. 
“It was high and we flushed it out for three days and it’s non-detectable now,” Przybylski said. He also said that well six, the newest well in town, is ready to go online after it gets flushed.
Town board president Casey McNulty picked the winners for the cemetery fundraiser.

All Aboard new restaurant in Hill City

Locals and visitors alike can now come all aboard at the new restaurant on Hill City’s Main Street. Located in the former home of the Box Car Eats & Treats, All Aboard is run by Jessica and Casey Rasmussen. 
“I just wanted a new adventure,” said Jessica. “This is something we enjoy. We used to have a food trailer and we totally enjoy it.” 
Jessica has worked in the food industry for around 25 years after a friend got her started. 
“I’ve just done it for so many years, it just feels natural,” she said.

A 2015 Harvard University study on resiliency asked, “When confronted with the fall out of childhood trauma, why do some children adapt and overcome, while others bear lifelong scars that flatten their potential? A growing body of evidence points to one common answer: Every child who winds up doing well has had at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive adult.”
“Why not be that one adult?” asked Hill City resident Emily Rowe. 

Small towns bring on big art

Locals and visitors to the Hill City area can enjoy two art shows right down the street from each other this weekend.
Crazy Horse Memorial  will showcase the 33rd annual Gift From Mother Earth art show with over 20 exhibitors selling a wide variety of artwork. The three-day show and sale begins June 14 at 8 a.m. although artists will be on hand setting up June 13 for those who want to purchase early.

New citizens to be naturalized June 14

On June 14, Mount Rushmore National Memorial will host a Naturalization Ceremony in honor of Flag Day. The National Park Service, the U.S. District Court for the District of South Dakota, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will welcome more than 150 people from over 40 countries.

Low primary turnout sparks concern

Every ballot cast in Lyman County for Tuesday’s primary election was worth $134 in taxpayer money, Lyman County auditor Kalli Houchin estimated. 
Only 67 people voted in the south-central South Dakota county—just over 6 percent of registered voters. Yet the county spent about $9,000 on ballot printing, hiring election workers and other costs.
In Hughes County, which includes the capital city of Pierre, each of its 304 ballots cast was worth roughly $70 in taxpayer funds. The county had less than 5 percent voter turnout.

Close races are election theme

A familiar face will return to Hill City Hall as former city alderwoman Tana Nichols has won the race to become the new mayor of Hill City. Nichols defeated Stefanie Doaty in a tight race, getting 130 votes to Doaty’s 123. It is unclear if there will be a recount, and all results are unofficial until votes are canvassed. If the result holds, Nichols will serve a two-year term.
There will be two new faces on the Hill City Council, as Justin Thiry edged Steve Jarvis in Ward I by a 74-72 vote. This race, however, will likely be subjected to a recount.

ADUs to require conditional use permits

After six months of discussion, Hill City developmental services coordinator Dani Schade presented the first reading of the Planning and Zoning Commission’s (PZC) amendments to chapters two, five and nine of Title Nine Zoning & Subdivision Regulations at the Hill City Common Council Meeting May 28. 
Originally, the commission was instructed by the council to pursue allowing duplexes, triplexes and Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) in Residential 1 and 2 zones without a conditional use permit (CUP). 

Water, wastewater plans move forward with study

The Hill City Common Council discussed the next step for water and wastewater at the May 28 meeting as it reviewed a task order from city engineer AE2S for a rate-design study.  
Joe Nobel with AE2S said AE2S took council input provided at a previous meeting and looked at refining the project down to the bare bones. 
“We’ll be conducting a water-rate analysis and wastewater-rate analysis. And then once we’ve completed that analysis, one of the key things that we heard was having a workshop with future council post-election,” said Nobel.
