Keystone Board passes slash pile ordinance

The Keystone Town Board passed a new ordinance creating regulations for slash pile burning at its Nov. 1 meeting, fulfilling their goal to have one in place by that date. 

New wellness center opens in Hill City

A new chiropractic and wellness center has opened its doors in Hill City, as of Nov. 1. Chiropractor Dave McDonald and his wife, Jennifer, relocated their clinic from Custer to Hill City, simultaneously joining The Wellness Way, a national organization that serves as an alternative to the more mainstream healthcare environment and mindset. 
“We are a network of health restoration clinics that think and act differently to solve health challenges others can’t, and people come to us as a last resort,” Dr. Dave explained. 

Hill City Purse Project blesses women’s shelters

It has been said that you can tell a lot about a woman by her purse. However, when it comes to the Hill City Purse Project (HCPP), you can tell a lot about the citizens of Hill City by the purses they put together for the women at the Cornerstone Women’s Home (CWH) in Rapid City and Women Escaping A Violent Environment (WEAVE) in Custer. 
“It’s just such a heartwarming project,” said Sue Anderson. “We all thought that we wouldn’t even think of continuing to do it except both places are so appreciative of what we bring in.”

Girlfriends getting ready to sparkle

With some new people on the 11th annual Girlfriends’ Weekend committee, Shawn Burkett, who is coordinating the event this year, says that the town is looking forward to a great weekend.
“It’s a lot of fun,” she said. “It’s a great way to get together with your girlfriends to shop locally and eat at good restaurants. It’s a whole weekend with a different event each day.”
The fun kicks off on Friday, Nov. 3, with the most anticipated event of the weekend — the  glitz and glam of the fashion show.

City council appoints engineer

In recent weeks and months, the Hill City Common Council has had meetings with KLJ Engineering and AE2S regarding the role of city engineer. Alderman Dale Householder said both were very competent companies that could do the work that the city needs. 
“We like the scope of the larger companies because they have multiple offices with multiple disciplinary experts which I think in the long run could save us money,” said Householder. 
Householder recommended proceeding with AE2S as the city engineer at the Oct. 23 meeting of the council. 

A feast of buffalo with a side of history

It was all started by the famous carver himself after the dedication of the peak that would eventually be carved into Mount Rushmore. And nearly 100 years later, the buffalo dinner tradition continues.

Keystone Library hosting two events

South Dakota Humanities Speakers Bureau Scholar Molly Barari is conducting Her Heirlooms: Creative Life Writing Workshop at the Keystone Community Center (KCC) Saturday, Nov. 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The workshop’s focus is on childhood memories, writing dialogue and writing backstory. Barari will provide prompts to help participants write their life memories.

Veterans Day Lunch Nov. 11

Keystone Senior Center and Social Club will host its Veterans Day Lunch Saturday, Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Keystone Senior Center. 
All veterans as well as friends, family and community members are welcome to come enjoy a delicious meal. 
Veterans will eat free, and a free will donation is appreciated from everyone else. At this time a menu has not been decided.
After the meal, former District 30 Rep. Tim Goodwin will be the guest speaker. 

Coin switch spawns some to swear

A lack of decorum flowed in a conversation at the Oct. 18 Keystone Town Board if Trustees meeting over installing a switch to override coin operation at Keystone’s bulk water dispenser. The language included “f-bombs” and the meeting was called back to order by attorney Mitch Johnson after trustees’ and citizens’ language began to deteriorate.
The discussion centered around a request for Midwest Lithium to obtain  between 1,500-2,000 gallons per day of water for its exploratory mining operation on Old Hill City Road. 

Pack Mule provides provisions

Pack Mule Provisions and Grocery has opened its doors at McGregor and Main in Hill City. Strategically situated below McGregor and Main Luxury Lofts, the artisan market is bringing a new concept to the Black Hills.
Co-owner Benjamin Klinkel said the location is meant to “be in good cooperation with the people who are renting upstairs.” The Pack Mule space is best defined as “a concept designed to go below living spaces to raise the value of the four walls rented above.” In Hill City the space above is nightly rentals.
