Donald Kraus

Donald Raymond Kraus was born March 29, 1947, in Detroit Lakes, Minn., to Darwin and Verona Kraus.
Don graduated in the class of 1965 in Frazee and went on to college at North Dakota State University where he graduated with a BS degree in civil engineering. Don later landed a job in 1970 as highway design engineer for the South Dakota Highway Department on Interstate 90 construction projects near Chamberlain, S.D., that included the 2000’ bridge across the Missouri River.  

Linda Jackson

Linda Mae (Hattervig) Jackson was born Aug. 24, 1948, at Sioux Valley Hospital (now Sanford Hospital) in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Erma Mae and Thomas Ray Hattervig.
Linda spent her early years on a farm just east of Viborg, S.D. At the age of 5, her family moved into the town of Viborg, where she attended first and second grade. In 1956, they moved to Hill City, S.D., where Linda attended third grade. The following year, her family relocated to Custer, S.D., where Linda continued her education from fourth through 11th grade.

John Swallow III

John Dale Swallow III was born May 8, 1963, in Pine Ridge, S.D. to John L. Swallow, Jr. and Susanna (White Wolf) Swallow.  
John was an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota Sioux Tribe (OST) and was a Fire Carrier and Tender of the Fire during ceremony. He attended Shannon County Elementary at Red Shirt, S.D., Holbrook Indian middle school in Arizona and was a 1981 graduate of Red Cloud Indian High School Pine Ridge, S.D.  He participated in boxing, wrestling, and track. In 1984 he graduated Wyoming Technical Institute in Laramie, Wyo.

Kevin Derynck

Kevin Michael Derynck was born in Marshall, Minn., to Robert (Ike) and Joan Derynck Oct. 31, 1955, and was the oldest of five children.
Kevin spent his younger years on the family farm in Tyler, Minn. The days were long and the work was hard, but little did he know this would instill in him a work ethic that would guide him through life.

JoAnn Evans

JoAnn Jeanette Evans was born June 29, 1936, in Roundup Mont., to Edwin and Easter Lacey. They moved to Sheridan, Wyo., and then to Custer, S.D., JoAnn’s junior year of high school.
She married Bobby Evans April 18, 1958. They had two children, Greg and Terri.
JoAnn was a long-time resident of Custer, and she loved the Custer community and was very proud to be from Custer. JoAnn had many great friends in the Custer community. She was an active member of Custer Lutheran Fellowship. Her Church family provided her the spiritual support she needed and have been very helpful.

Dallas Scott

Dallas Roy Scott was born Aug. 19, 1972, in Hot Springs, S.D., to Gerald and Kathleen (Brown) Scott. He was welcomed home to Custer by siblings Cynthia and Allen. He was baptized and confirmed at Custer (S.D.) Lutheran Fellowship.

Donald Spencer

Donald Lee Spencer was born June 2, 1936, in Custer, S.D., to Miles and Kathryn (Richardson) Spencer. He attended school in Burdock, S.D., and then graduated from Edgemont (S.D.) High School in 1954. In 1959 he married Pat Weaver. They had one daughter, Diane Spencer.

Marlyn Ramse

Marlyn Gene Ramse was born April 5, 1936, in Lennox, S.D., to Gilbert and Tena  Ramse (Bultena).
He attended grade school for eight years and then Worthing (S.D.) High School for three years. He finished up with a GED while in the army for two years.
In August of 1962 he married Barbara Jane Clark of Richmond, Calif. They were blessed with three daughters.

Peter Burkett

Peter “Pete” Ronald Burkett was born July 18, 1947, in Fall River, Mass.  He was the son of Harold Burkett and Helen Stadnik Burkett.  Pete grew up and graduated from high school in San Jose, Calif.
After high school Pete went into the military. He served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force working as a mechanical engineer on boilers and other equipment. After his retirement, Pete worked at the Army Depot in Sacramento, Calif., and then for AFN, the military radio and TV channel as a Broadcast Engineer. He lived in Colton, Calif.

James Johnson

James “Jim” Edward Johnson was born to James and June (Schuman) Johnson in Camp Douglas Wis., July 27, 1937.
The family moved quite often, with James Sr., along with other family members following the construction boom of the time. Jim often stated that he never attended the same school for more than a year.
In 1946, the family moved to California, where he later graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1955. He also attended college for a time, working toward a degree in civil engineering.
