Trio of victories at home for volleyball

Three teams, three wins and just like that the Hill City Rangers volleyball team is 12-3 on the season. 
The girls corralled the Bison of Hot Springs (25-12, 25-12, 25-18) on Tuesday, then scooped up Sturgis Thursday (25-15, 25-17, 25-24), before confining the Jones County Coyotes over the weekend (25-7, 25-23, 25-13).
Grace Peckosh missed zero serves on the three-game stretch with  nine aces overall. Peckosh also had 21 kills and 32 assists.

Golfers second at first home meet

The Custer High School golf team made its home debut last Friday as the Wildcats hosted the Custer Invitational at Rocky Knolls Golf Course. The team played its way to a second-place finish, finishing four strokes behind St. Thomas More. The Wildcats finished with a team total of 318, while St. Thomas More was at 314.
Wiles led the charge for the Wildcats, finishing in second with a score of 77. Medalist honors went to Vincent Vanliere of St. Thomas More, who finished at 72.

Wildcat soccer ties Freeman Academy

Much as they do in nature or in a back alley behind a dumpster, the cat fight that broke out at the Custer soccer field last Saturday morning ended in a draw.
It was an important draw for the Custer High School soccer team in the race for a spot in the Class A playoffs, as the ’Cats took an early lead and hung on late for the 3-3 tie against the visiting James Valley Bobcats. The Bobcats came into the game as the fourth-ranked team in Class A.

’Cats second at West River tourney

The Custer High School volleyball team had a busy week last week, playing Sept. 3 versus Sturgis, last Thursday versus Hot Springs and finally playing two full days of matches in the West River Tournament in Rapid City over the weekend.
“Overall, we did a great job handling our busy schedule. We did come into Friday a little sluggish and with quite a few girls battling illness and some injuries. However, on Saturday we turned around and came away with some good wins,” said head coach Jill Hohn.

Football team can’t handle Madison

On a third down pass on Custer’s first possession, quarterback Roland Sedlacek dropped back and began to wind up for a throw, only to be hit by Madison’s Braydon Gust. The hit on Sedlacek’s arm caused a fumble, which was scooped up by the Bulldogs’ Tyan Braskamp and run into the end zone from 37 yards out.
That was a microcosm of the entirety of the first half, as things didn’t get any better for the homestanding Wildcats.

Boys win, girls second at Chadron race

The Custer High School Cross Country team traveled to Chadron, Neb., last Friday and both the boys and girls teams came away with some high placements in individual and team scores. With some runners out sick at the meet, it was the many younger runners on the team who stepped up to keep the team competitive.
“With us being a little bit young and inexperienced, it’s a great developmental meet for us. Some of the younger kids are stepping up,” said head coach Karen Karim.

Unlucky loss drops Rangers to 3-1

The Harding County Bison bumped the Hill City Rangers off of their perfect season, delivering an unlucky 50-43 loss to Hill City Friday Sept. 13.
Hill City scored first on the field taking a 7-0 lead against the Bison and remained in the lead through the first half of play.
Quarterback Devin Buehler fired long passes all game, mixing up receivers, and giving the Rangers a whopping 363 passing yards in the game.

Perfect volleyball season terminated

The girls volleyball team suffered its first losses of the season playing a tournament at the monument this weekend.
The Rangers came off a sweep of Douglas Sept. 10, winning 25-10, 25-18 and 25-15. Coach Allie Henderson saud the team was “particularly looking forward to playing Douglas this year. I felt confident we were going to come away with a win but you never know, and I always tell the girls to never underestimate anyone.”
The match began with lots of long volleys but once the Rangers slowed the pace down it was a straight set win. 

Rangers set personal records in Sioux Falls

Last week the Hill City High School Ranger cross country team traveled to Sioux Falls for the Nike Heartland Preview Saturday, Sept. 14. 
According to head coach Joe Noyes, the course is similar to what the Rangers will compete on for the remainder of the season.
“It was good to get the kids on a track like that again and watch them cruise,” said Noyes. 
In the boys varsity 5K, Tate Grabow claimed sixth place with a personal record of 15:47.10. Only one athlete from South Dakota beat Grabow, and he was an AA runner. 

One win, one loss for volleyball

It was a mixed bag as far as the past couple meets went for the Custer Wildcats team: on one hand was Thursday’s swift victory over Newell and on the other was last Tuesday’s tight 5-set loss to Douglas.
As for the Douglas match, “that game was disappointing” said head coach Jill Hohn. In the end, the ‘Cats lost 27-25, 14-25, 20-25, 26-24, 9-15.
“We just did not play very well together as a team...Unfortunately, we had a lot of mistakes,” said Hohn. So, after spending time on practice to course-correct on Wednesday, the team was ready for a comeback as it faced Newell.
