Golf team tees off season in Belle Fourche

The Custer High School girls golf team has been faced with cancellations and postponements since the start of the season. The one tournament the growing team was able to go to was also moved from Hot Springs to Belle Fourche, and the team did quite well.
The team is returning all its members from last year except for Amber Layton, who graduated last year, and there are some new golfers as well.  

Lehman brothers pace track team

Drew and Cade Lehman combined for three medals—including two golds—to lead the Custer High School boys track team as it competed in the Queen City Classic last Friday at Lyle Hare Stadium on the campus of Black Hills State University in Spearfish.
The meet was a large one that included Class AA teams and large schools from Wyoming and Montana. In many events Custer placed behind only the participants from the larger schools.

Rangers outrun the weather

Temperatures for the Queen City Classic High School Meet in Spearfish April 5 were projected to be a little warm, but temperatures stayed around 65 degrees giving the Hill City High School Ranger Track and Field team another opportunity to compete unencumbered by the weather. Last year, the Rangers were not able to compete until April 11 due to the weather. 
“It was a really good day. The weather turned out to be just beautiful,” said head coach Joe Noyes. “It’s been nice that we’ve been able to take advantage of these good days and get the kids meets.” 

Rangers finish third on opening day

Golf has swung into action for the Hill City Rangers Golf team.
The Rangers kicked off the 2024 season at the Class B Classic in Mitchell on Friday, April 5.  The team finished strong, placing third among the field of 21  teams. The Rangers scored 249 team points, closely behind  Miller at 241 and  Wall at 243. 

Track team competes in Sturgis

Not every event was contested at last week’s Early Bird Meet in Sturgis, but the Custer High School track team was still able to improve in several events over the course of the event. Discus, javelin, long jump and triple jump were not contested due to the snowstorm that had hit Sturgis earlier in the week.
On the boys side of things Carter Tennyson was victorious in the high jump, clearing a personal record of 6-2, and barely missing at 6-4.

Rangers catch the early bird

The weather held off so the Hill City High School Ranger Track and Field team competed at the Early Bird Track and Field Invite in Sturgis March 28. 
Across the board, head coach Joe Noyes said athletes achieved personal records or placed in the top eight. Meanwhile, several athletes who were frustrated by their results at the first meet saw things click this week. 
“We had a lot more kids pleased and just a lot better perspective overall on the outcome of the meet,” said Noyes.

Track team opens season in Newcastle

The Custer High School track team got its season off to a strong start last week in Newcastle, Wyo., where it competed in the Laura Chord Memorial.
The meet featured schools from both Wyoming and South Dakota, ranging in size from Thunder Basin High School in Gillette, Wyo., to Midwest, Wyo. (population 283).
The meet was both a high school and junior high meet, and had as many as 180 entries between the two in some events, making for a long day. Custer head coach Karen Karim said the weather was decent until the afternoon, when it became cold and windy.

’Cats hope for return to podium this spring

Fresh off a second-place finish at last year’s Class A State Meet, the Custer High School girls track team will make a push to return to that spot—or higher—at this year’s state meet with a handful of returning girls looking to match or better state finishes a year ago.
At the top of the list for returning girls is Jojo Larsen, who was second in the 100 at last year’s state meet and third in the 200, as well as a member of the medley team that finished in third place.

Rangers off to an early start

For the first time in nine years, the weather allowed the Hill City High School Ranger Track and Field team to compete in its first meet of the season at the Laura Chord Memorial High School/Middle School Invite in Newcastle, Wyo. 
“When we saw it was going to be 60 in Newcastle and they were having the meet, we talked about it and said, ‘We’ve got to take advantage of it,’” said head coach Joe Noyes. “As coaches, we were really pleased. The kids performed well.”

Pole vaulters set high bar at indoor meet

The Custer Wildcat pole vaulters set a high bar (literally) at the Chadron State Colllege High School Invitational indoor track meet last Saturday. Custer Athletes took the first place spots in both the boys and the girls pole vault events at the meet.
Sisters Cienna and Tenlee Stiefel came in first and second place, respectively. Cienna, who is a junior also broke the meet record of 12’, which she tied for last year, making the new record 12’2.
Tenlee earned second with 10’, and teammate Addie Sander earned fifth place with 7’6.
