Karim, Vincent honored for track coaching

Two Custer High School track coaches were honored for their coaching work at the conclusion of the spring 2024 season.
Custer head coach Karen Karim was named the South Dakota Cross Country and Track and Field Coach’s Association Track and Field Coach of the Year for Area 4 in Class A. In addition, Tayton Vincent was named the Assistant Coach of the Year.
Karim and Tayton helped coach the Custer High School boys track team to a runner-up finish at last May’s state meet, while the girls placed third.

Students compete in state rodeo

The Custer High School Rodeo Team, along with other Custer County high school students, competed in the state rodeo June 13 in Ft. Pierre.
The top four in each event advance to the National High School Finals Rodeo July 14-20 in Rock Springs, Wyo. Scores are determined by an average of points brought into the state rodeo via regional rodeos as well as three go-rounds at the meet.

Girls golf finishes 11th at state

The Custer girls golf team competed at the State A Golf Tournament at Bakker Crossing Golf Course in Sioux Falls June 3-4.
Out of the 12 qualifying teams competing, the Wildcats took 11th place with a total score of 823. Sioux Falls Christian was the top team, with a combined score of 634. At the end of the first day of competition the team stood in 10th place with a score of 412, ahead of Belle Fourche and Mobridge-Pollock. By the end of day two the Belle Fourche Broncs took over Custer’s spot in the competition.

Local cowboys, cowgirls compete

The Southern Hills Rowdies and the Custer High School rodeo team hosted the Custer Rowdy Roundup High School Practice Rodeo May 26-27 in Oelrichs.
The reined cow, horse  and cutting events were held Sunday morning. Rodeo one was held Sunday afternoon. Rodeo two was held Monday morning following the grand entry that featured the Hot Springs American Legion Color Guard.

Rangers putt into top six at state

Golf season officially ended with the Hill City Rangers taking home sixth  place at the South Dakota Class B State Tournament  that took place at the Brookings Country Club  June 3-4.
The Hill City Fire Department gave the team a send off at 9 a.m. June 1.
“It felt so good,” said coach Josh Daiss about the send off and community support throughout the season. “It made us feel special. We felt it across the state.” 

Boys second, girls third at state track meet

Heading into the start of last weekend’s South Dakota State Class A Track Meet, Custer head coach Karen Karim said Sioux Falls Christian’s head coach told her he hadn’t even considered the Custer High School boys in his calculations for teams that could challenge his Chargers for the team title.
He probably should have.
The Wildcat boys gave the Chargers all they wanted and more in the team race, falling to the Chargers by a mere two points—68-66—on their way to a second-place finish at the meet, which was held in Sioux Falls.

Ranger boys 4x800 relay team are state champions

With 26 athletes, the Hill City High School Ranger track and field team took on the South Dakota Class A State Track & Field Meet May 23-25. 
Although some expectations were not met, the meet held a state championship win, several personal records and a few surprises. 
“We knew it was going to be tough for our boys because we had a small group of guys that had to score most of our points. That was kind of asking a lot of them, but they still had some really good things take place,” said head coach Joe Noyes. 

Girls golf qualifies for state meet

The Custer High School girls golf team is state-bound after earning second place in team scores at the region tournament in Hot Springs Monday. The top three teams advance to state, and the standings were St. Thomas More in first with a combined 402 points, Custer in second with 430 and Belle Fourche in third with 455. Rapid City Christian earned fouth with a score of 489.
“It was a good day. We were hoping for better scores, but with the conditions they played in, they did great,” said head coach Haley Uphoff.

Wildcats compete at home, head to state this week

It’s state meet time for the Custer High School track team, as those who qualified will head to Sioux Falls this weekend for the Class A State Track Meet at Howard Wood Field. The meet runs Friday and Saturday.
The Wildcats will take a large contingent of athletes to the meet, many of whom are seeded highly in their respective events.
“I hope we make the podium (top six) in both the boys and the girls,” head coach Karen Karim said.

Back-to-back champs geared to tee off at state

The Hill City Rangers golf team has once again taken home the Class 6B Region championship. 
“Last  year  was the first year the  Hill City golf team took a tegion championship. Now we are back-to-back winners,” coach Josh Daiss said.
The Rangers defeated by one stroke both the Wall Eagles and the Philip Scotties,  both of whom tied for second place.
Daiss called the region competition tight and “leaps and bounds’ more challenging than the last several years of play.
