10 years ago, 2014 — Ruth Ziolkowski, the beloved matriarch of Crazy Horse Memorial, friend to many, champion of Native American causes and an icon in the tourism industry, had died. Ziolkowski died May 21 while in hospice care in Rapid City at the age of 87.

Thursday, April 25
2:55 p.m.: Deputies assisted with an alarm at a federal fire-fighting facility on Tatanka Drive. The alarm was false, though ironic.
3:08 p.m.: A one-vehicle rollover was reported on Hwy. 385 south of Custer. The driver was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A sudden spring hailstorm that dumped over an inch of pea-sized hail on the roadway may have played a part in the wreck.

10 years ago, 2014 — The dispute between former City of Custer community development director Rex Harris and the City of Custer appears to have been settled, with Harris expected to receive financial compensation from the city for what he said was nearly 800 hours of unused sick leave during his time with the city...Marcel and Sherry Wahlstrom Were the new owners of the Bavarian Inn.  The two had been married two weeks earlier, and gave up the pampering and excess of a traditional honeymoon to continue work on their new property.

Forty years flown by

For decades visitors and locals alike have taken to the skies with Black Hills Balloons for unparalleled and unique views of the scenic Black Hills. This year, owners Damien and Keely Mahony celebrate 40 years of Black Hills Balloons in the Custer and Black Hills area.
The couple purchased the business in the spring of 2015 from longtime owner Steve Bauer but both were already experienced balloon pilots before then.

Tesla Rally rolls into town this weekend

Over 45 Tesla owners are gearing up for the Sound of Silence Tesla Road Trip Rally, which will take place in Custer this weekend. The event is being sponsored by the Custer Area Chamber of Commerce and is now in its 10th year, making it the only Tesla Road Trip Rally of its kind in the United States.
The chamber has invited Tesla owners to come and explore the beautiful drives that the Southern Black Hills has to offer.

10 years ago, 2014 — A call was placed to 911 claiming there was possibly a man at Custer Elementary with a gun and knives. Law enforcement from the Custer County Sheriff’s Department, National Park Service, South Dakota Department of Game, Fish & Parks and South Dakota Highway Patrol swarmed to the school, but after several minutes on the scene and clearing the building room by room, it was determined there was no such man at the school.
