How South Dakota spent $14B in pandemic money

South Dakota received nearly $14 billion in federal COVID-19 funding from March 2020 through January, according to an internal state fiscal report obtained exclusively by South Dakota News Watch.
The document tallies the $13.84 billion intended to help governments, businesses, organizations and individuals survive and recover from a pandemic that killed 1 million Americans and more than 3,100 South Dakotans.
The federal funding came from six separate acts of Congress and was part of an overall $4.6 trillion in federal COVID-19 aid provided to states.

Down Memory Lane March 1

10 years ago, 2013 — Building permits for the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) compound in southwestern Custer County were extended  after the FLDS met stipulations set forth by the county before it would grant the extentions. County planning director David Green suggested the county hold off on extending the permits until FLDS officials allowed the county to inspect the buildings being constructed.

6:47 a.m.: A cooler containing T-shirts was lost from the back of a vehicle somewhere on Hwy. 40 east of Hermosa. It wasn’t known what the cool shirts said or why they were being kept on ice.

 

Marcy artwork at courthouse gallery

A transplant from California to Minnesota, artist Lynn Marcy vacationed often in the Black Hills. As a result, the Black Hills are a substantial inspiration for her artwork. Now residing in Custer, an exhibition of Marcy’s artwork is on display at Custer County Courthouse Art Gallery through March.
Marcy narrates her story.

10 years ago, 2013 — City of Custer community development director Rex Harris said the city’s 30-year comprehensive plan, which the city’s planning committee had been working on crafting for the past three years, was “effectively killed” at the Feb. 11 meeting of the planning committee.

Tuesday, Feb. 7

4:25 p.m.: A possible assault was reported at a Hermosa truck stop. Some investigation found the actual assault may have occurred in Oglala Lakota County…or not. A friend took the reporting person back home to sober up. Further follow-up may happen.

Martins celebrate 75 years of marriage

Getting ready for an interview for the Custer Community Church, Wayne Martin quickly gets his visitor a cup of coffee, complete with daughter Vikki’s banana bread.
With a home adjacent to the Martin home on Lower French Creek Rd, Vikki is a significant caregiver for her parents, Wayne and Gertrude, a couple who will celebrate 75 years of marriage this year.
Wayne was born May 9, 1926, at Eagle Butte, soon to celebrate his 97th birthday.  He and his wife Gertrude have many stories of living a life on the Dakota Prairie.
