It’s back to the drawing board for the Custer Community Center, as the Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) for the project, presented by project manager at risk Ainsworth Benning, was rejected by the Custer City Council at the council’s Monday evening meeting.
Ainsworth Benning presented a GMP of $5,364,911, well over the $4.5 million the city had set as the amount it wanted to borrow for the project after a review of its finances and borrowing power.

Residents of the city of Custer whose homes are located on a floodplain may be able to receive flood insurance at a lower rate when a Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) for the floodplain becomes official, likely at the latter end of next year. A LOMR is the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMj1
A) official modification to an effective Flood Insurance Rate Map. LOMRs can result in a physical change to the existing regulatory floodway, the effective base flood elevations or the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA).
The City of Custer is pursuing a grant to help it purchase two pieces of property within its floodplain along French Creek that would be razed and turned into green space.
Only a couple of hours after saying he might pull his application for Custer County’s airport manager position altogether, airport manager Brenden Hendrickson has a new five-year contract waiting for him when the calendar turns to Jan. 1.
It appears the Crazy Horse Scenic Byway will not come to fruition after the Custer County Commission unanimously voted not to support the project at the its Dec. 4 meeting.
The issue initially came up at the commission’s Nov. 6 meeting when approval was sought for the byway proposed by the Oglala Sioux Tribe. The byway would include parts of Hwy. 40 and 16A in Custer County.

Custer County will participate in Wreaths Across America this weekend to remember fallen U.S. veterans, honor those who serve and teach children the value of freedom. Wreaths Across America does this by placing wreaths on veterans’ graves simultaneously across the country. The ceremonies are conducted by local organizations.
