3:21 p.m.: The person transported to a Custer motel by a deputy the previous night was apparently intoxicated again (or still) and refusing to leave the place after check-out time. The deputy took the person to another place for the night—the detox facility in Rapid City.

Wife, mother, rancher, business owner, paraprofessional and college student—it’s not a life many would choose, but it’s the adventure Dani Stearns took on as a way to support the school she loves. 
After working as a paraprofessional at the Elk Mountain School for a few years, Stearns took advantage of the opportunity to go back to school to get her teacher certification.

Food stamp soda ban would cost state money

Barring the use of food stamp benefits for soda purchases would cost South Dakota taxpayers $310,000 in the first two years, according to a fiscal impact statement released Thursday evening by the South Dakota Legislative Research Council.
The new restriction would cost the state about $248,000 a year after that — less than half what an adviser to Gov. Larry Rhoden said it might on Wednesday.

Gov. Larry Rhoden and secretary of the Department of Tourism, James Hagen, presented 12 awards to business and individuals for outstanding achievements and contributions to the tourism industry at the 2026 South Dakota Governor’s Conference on Tourism Jan. 22 in Pierre. 
Hill City’s Rollie Noem received the prestigious Ben Black Elk Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the state’s visitor industry in which he helped move South Dakota beyond roadside attractions into destination tourism.
