Event will remember, honor Horkey

The public is invited to the Custer County Courthouse Art Gallery for the unveiling of a new art exhibit, as well as a renaming of the gallery.
“Mosaic: One man’s vision of creativity,” a Kim Horkey restrospective will take place Friday, Nov. 15, from 3-5 p.m. at the gallery, located on the second floor of the courthouse.
The art gallery has been dedicated in honor of the late Horkey, its first director and a Custer resident who promoted the creative talents of local South Dakota artists.

7:11 p.m.: An out-of-state traveler called 911 to breathlessly report a person carrying an “AK-47” rifle while walking along Hwy. 16A. Some investigation found the person was, in fact, a legal hunter returning to his vehicle and the rifle in question was just a plain ‘ol huntin’ rifle.

10 years ago, 2004 — A $10,000 grant courtesy of the Mary Chilton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Foundation out of Sioux Falls will put the Custer County 1881 Courthouse Museum on the fast track to its goal of scanning newspapers and historical records and will fund the purchase of microfilm and a portion of scanning equipment needed for the project. 11:07 a.m.: Cat-stealing was reported at Valley-Hi Apartments in Custer. Like peeling the layers of an onion, many more issues were exposed as a deputy investigated, but none of them were police business.      

Seth Thompson turns Sheriff’s Log into book

Readers of the Custer County Chronicle’s weekly Sheriff’s Log, rejoice; the Sheriff’s Log is now a book.
For years, former Custer County Sheriff’s Office deputy (and still current reserve) Seth Thompson has written the weekly Sheriff’s Log in the Chronicle, and for years, has been told by those who read it how much they enjoy it, and that it would make a good book.
“I toyed with the notion for a long time. Different people would say ‘you should publish a ‘best of’ collection,’” Thompson said.
