Local teacher honored by state

Hill City’s career and technical education (CTE) teacher Travis Santistevan was recently honored by his peers for all the work he does to advance CTE. 
Santistevan was awarded both the Trades and Industry Division Teacher of the Year and the South Dakota Association for Career and Technical Education (SDACTE) Teacher of the Year honor.  
This is Santistevan’s fourth year in Hill City, but he is starting his 15th year as a classroom teacher. He was not the only local to be nominated and honored by the SDACTE.

Young Life hosts 13th archery tournament

Amateur archers and professionals alike are encouraged to participate in the 13th annual archery tournament fundraiser Aug. 29, hosted by Hill City Young Life in partnership with local businesses, individual sponsors and prize donors.
“Young Life is an organization that exists to introduce high school kids to Jesus and help them grow in their faith. The archery tournament is one of our two big fundraisers that we do every year to help fund that mission here in Hill City,” said Young Life director Sarah Weischedel.

Chief Gail Schmidt named Volunteer Chief of the Year

Volunteer Fire Chief Gail Schmidt of the Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department has been named the 2026 IAFC Fire Chief of the Year.
Schmidt has been at the helm of the Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department since 2014, although she has dedicated over 30 years to the volunteer fire service.

— Two entrepreneurial children took advantage of the increased rally traffic to set up shop in Keystone this week. For the second year in a row 11-year-old Trey Sutherland and 12-year-old Taya Skogen sold lemonade and water to passersby in old Keystone ... While the  Black Hills prepared for an unprecedented rally, traffic numbers showed only a modest increase over last year’s attendance. Despite the lackluster numbers traffic accidents overall were up, while the number of  fatal accidents remained the same.
