School receives donation, faculty gets ‘cow-pied’

Annual Radar Run hits Deerfield Lake

The Black Hills Snowmobile Club will take the runway at its annual Radar Run event coming up March 1. The club won’t be walking the runway but rather racing at top speeds of upward of 100 mph across Deerfield Lake.
Some modifications from previous years, including shortening the track, were made for safety reasons. Club member Mike Boock only recalls one major wreck over the course of the years, but they want to focus on safety.

HCACF grants money to eight organizations

The Hill City Area Community Foundation (HCACF) gave out grants to eight organizations at its annual awards evening at the Hill City Center Feb. 21.
Melissa Rupert explained what the  HCACF is.
“Basically we are an organization that will take your money,” she  lightly began, “and we invest it with the South Dakota Community Foundation. (SDCF)”
HCACF then gets to use the interest that money earns and hand out grants to various charitable organizations and nonprofits in the Hill City area.
“We can help the community with so many projects,”  Rupert said.

Dondelinger speaks on D-Day at FOL meeting

Twenty-two people attended the Feb. 12 meeting of the Friends of the Hill City Library at the Super 8 conference room, during which Joe Dondelinger returned as the guest speaker to discuss “Reading D-Day.”
The Friends of the Hill City Library, Inc. (FOL) received its Certificate of Incorporation Non-Profit June 18, 1981, from the South Dakota secretary of state Alice Kundert.

Much more than just volunteer hours

Why should people volunteer? The Hill City Senior Citizens (HCSC) running the Volunteer Job Fair and Ice Cream Social Feb. 16 at the Hill City Center said it gives people an opportunity to build relationships.
“I think the most important thing is to get to know other people,” said Judy Swift. “I just really think it’s a worthwhile thing to do. I know a lot of people are really busy nowadays, but it’s nice to help. It’s good for the community, too.”
HCSC board member Scott Diagostine said the camaraderie is his favorite part of volunteering.

Praise for ‘Highline’

The screening of “The Highline of the Black Hills” at the Hill City Center Feb. 13 attracted a standing room only crowd.
The evening began with Jennifer Adler with South Dakota Public Broadcasting (SDPB) corporate support explaining the background slides of SDPB day at the state capitol where two motorcoaches of people showed up in Pierre to show their support of the news outlet after proposed cuts by former Gov. Kristi Noem.
“We can’t do it without you,” said Adler about sustaining members.

— North Dakota State College of Science head volleyball coach Jane Passa had announced the addition of Holly Peckosh of Hill City High School. Peckosh was a player that would not only add size and athleticism, but also came from a winning culture, Passa said ... The elementary school was growing, according to elementary school principal Samantha Weaver. Eleven students had entered the school in the last month. The school was working on increasing attendance overall with various initiatives.

Keystone chamber set to reorganize

For its chamber members and the Keystone community, the board of the Keystone Chamber of Commerce would like to provide a quick update on its plans for 2025 and beyond.
The town board decided last fall to discontinue its long-time partnership with the chamber to provide visitor marketing for Keystone. It has now hired a firm in Rapid City to handle promotion and advertising.
