Plein air confers creative challenges

The eighth annual Black Hills Plein Air Paint Out began a little wet for both artists and organizers. Hill City Arts Council volunteers spent a wet Wednesday making space in the Jon Crane Gallery and moving some artwork into a truck on loan from Boyd’s Antiques so that plein air art could be displayed for the show.

Community center gets freshened up

The Keystone Community Center (KCC) continues to undergo a remodel as the library finally gets put back together. Residents will notice several improvements to the building including a new color paint outside, new floors inside, new cabinets in the meeting room and a new desk and credenza in the library. The town has spent $63,878.25 so far on the project for Fiscal Year 2025. This does not include last year’s renovations of the KCC kitchen.
Keystone Town Board president Casey McNulty called the KCC the heart of Keystone.

Help get Hill City in the holiday spirit

Hill City’s Old Tyme Christmas is a popular event to kick off the Christmas season, with a festive old-fashioned home-town parade with lighted floats and community spirit. The event typically takes place the Friday after Thanksgiving. This year, the downtown merchants committee is asking for community members to get in the holiday spirit a little bit earlier. 
Committee chairman Pete Stach is asking for community help to sort, test and hang 75,000 lights on 43 of the street light poles in downtown Hill City.

Celebrate Recovery celebrates 10 years in Hill City

September is National Recovery Month, an annual observance dedicated to celebrating and promoting the recovery community and the treatment and support that makes recovery possible. It’s also Celebrate Recovery Hill City’s 10th year of helping community members with personal struggles and creating healthier habits.

Plein Air returns to Hill City

The eighth annual Black Hills Plein Air Paint Out is coming to Hill City Sept. 18-20. 
There are 18 painters coming to Hill City. Some are returning artists, while others are coming for the first time. Last year’s best of show winner, Cheryl LeClair-Sommer, is returning, along with best quick draw winner Michael Walter and people’s choice  winner Jill Tesnow.

Local bank branch rolls up their sleeves for volunteer day

Last Wednesday First Interstate Bank completed its eighth annual volunteer day where the local Hill City branch employees were able to hit the trail—the Mickelson Trail.
At noon on Wednesday, all First Interstate Bank branches were closed to allow the 3,500 employees to spend the remainder of their workday volunteering for a nonprofit in their area. This year, First Interstate Bank employees assisted with 440 separate service projects across the bank’s 14-state footprint. 

Young Life hosts 12th annual archery tournament

Hill City Young Life hosted its 12th annual Young Life Archery Tournament Aug. 30 with the help of partnering local business, individual sponsors and prizes donors. 
The tournament serves as a fundraiser to benefit the local Christ-centered ministry that connects with adolescents in the community and builds relationships through fun and adventurous experiences that connect youth to Christ and help them grow in their faith.
