Thank you to all the kids and their parents that participated in the Kids Summer Reading Contest. There were 80 registered contestants. We had a 60 percent completion rate for the six-week event. The winners of the Grand Prizes were:
PreK: Brigitta Del Valle and Bently Becher each won a Strider Bike and helmet.
Elementary: Wilder King and Joah Green each won a bicycle and helmet valued at $200.

— Dennis Krull was nominated as the president of the Hill City School District Board of Education. Angie Ross was to serve as vice president of the board, and John Stam and Rob Timm were sworn in as the newest members of the board ... Business owners in Hill City had been waiting for the sidewalks in town to be repaired for a long time but had some concerns about the order of repairs so as not to negatively impact business. There was a meeting to discuss this July 9, and the project was slated to begin after Labor Day weekend.

— Battle Creek in Keystone was raging as the Southern Black Hills were hit hard with rain. According to the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, Main Street in Keystone had one lane open and traffic was being diverted ... Jack Welker was tapped to head the Masons of Hill City for the next 12 months as worshipful master of the lodge, a title that dates back to 1700s England. Masonic Lodges across South Dakota support various local youth and community projects and humanitarian efforts through South Dakota Masonic Charities.

The Kids’ Summer Reading Contest is off to a great start! At this time, we 79 kids registered. The kids earn weekly prizes and if they complete all six weeks of reading their name is entered in the grand prize drawing for their age group. 
All reading logs are due by July 15 for entry in the grand prize drawings  Wednesday, July 17. The free programs provided by the library and hosted by the HC Boys & Girls Club have been well attended.
