The windstorm Dec. 17-18 that hit the Black Hills region was unprecedented.  The National Weather Service indicated that wind gusts reached 101 mph, and that a 94 mph wind gust, an all time high, was officially recorded at the Rapid City Regional Airport at 5:13 a.m. Dec. 18.
Black Hills Energy gave its first update to its customers that same morning,  at 4:30 a.m.

Twelve people were selected as Community Angels for 2025. These included Keystone residents Sherry and Rick Smith and Eileen Roggentein. Scott and Ericka Rainford, Lloyd  and Paula Pike and Allen Tate from the nonprofit Stars and Stripes, Keystone librarian Robin Scott, Tracy Harrison of the Keystone Park Board, the Keystone Senior Center, Deb Dargaatz of the Keystone Area Historical Society, Will Gonsurion and Justin Pierson of the Haunting of Keystone.

Sentinel donates to Hill City Angel Fund

Hill City Sentinel Federal Credit Union recently donated $250 toward the Hill City School District Angel Fund. The Angel Fund is used to help cover the school lunch deficit for those who need assistance, making sure no child goes hungry.
The National School Lunch Program that provides free and reduced lunches is an income-based, nationally-funded program requiring an annual application with household income details.

Powerful windstorm leaves many in the dark

Dozens of people came to charge phones, charge medical devices, use the internet, grab a hot meal or coffee or even use the restroom at the Keystone Senior Center as the town and outlying areas were without power since the windstorm came through at 3 a.m. the morning of Dec 18.
“That’s what the senior center is for,” said treasurer of the Keystone Senior Center, Karen Boland.
Town Board president Casey McNulty kept people abreast of the potential for power restoration via the Keystone Happenings Facebook page.

Pavillion at Ponderosa Park takes shape

Work is underway, and phase one of the new Pavillion at Ponderosa Park, located near the Visitor Information Center on the west end of town, is nearing completion. Following initial dirt work, the concrete base has been poured and the walls erected.
“The plan is to be completely done before Friday,” said park board member, Cassandra Ott.
The board is now awaiting bids for phase two of the project, which will be reviewed in January. Phase two includes the installation of steel uprights and roof framing.
